Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

A rubbish day here in Southampton with cloudy skies and a chilly breeze. :(

It was supposed to be dry and sunny today with a high of about +19c but so far its dark and grey with a high of about +16c.

At least I got the lawns mowed and some palm trees pruned.

Re: LARGE PHOENIX CANARIENSIS PALMS IN THE UK.

There are some really nice large CIDPs in Torquay and Falmouth plus lots of other palms as well so It would be interesting to have some pictures of them as well. Have we no forum members in those areas? Also the largest J Chilensis in Europe growing outside in northern Europe is found in the Channel...

After a glorius day yesterday its back to cloud and a chilly wind.

The maximum so far is only +16c.

No sun today I think but I have a lot of tree pruning to do over the next few weeks.

Re: Longest summer since 1910 :)

I wouldn't insult my cranium by reading that rubbish? We will probably just get a bad summer anyway as at the moment we seem to get 8 bad and 2 good summers every 10 years on average. I would be happy to get 2 good weeks out of every month between now and October as maybe my S Romanzoffianum may act...

Re: Looking Good for the Weekend!

Cloudy and a bit damp this morning but it turned out warm and fairly sunny this afternoon.

The maximum seems to be about +17c so far and tomorrow is expected to be the same.

All exotics are okay this year in Southampton and it could be a good year for them.

Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

Dull and damp and not a nice day after yesterday?

Max on Sunday +21c.

Min on Sunday +12c.

Max so far today +13c.

Back to the usual Southampton dull and dreary weather but at least we are actually getting some green on the trees at last.

Re: THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

It's strange, I don't remember it being abnormally cold icon_scratch I remember deep snow drifts and people 'canoeing' down a big hill in a local park. Maybe I was hardier when younger icon_salut Brighton is on the south coast so it may not have got as cold as Southampton which lies some miles inla...

Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

It's quite surprising, because in colder winters, leaves have sprouted out earlier than this... but maybe that's why because there hasn't been a very cold period which has led to a warm period, which may initiate leaf growth earlier? Never heard of that. They are just this far because the temperatu...

Re: THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

It was a record breaking cold winter for many parts of the south coast, with lots of normally mild spots getting unheard of temperatures, for example: Tresco -7.2C Southsea -8.0C Torquay -7.8C Penzance -9.9C Portland -10.4C Weymouth -9.8C Hopefully we wont get a winter like that again icon_thumrigh...

Re: Bougainvillea Sanderiana

There was a fairly hardy Bougainvillea that flowered every year in a garden in west end near Southampton. This one had yellow flowers and gave a good show during the better summers. It was about 14 feet in height and spread but was killed during the terrible winter cold of January 1987. But it goes ...

THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

A short discussion on a largely forgotten winter? The winter of 1987 or to be more precise the first 3 weeks of January of that year. Although it was short and sharp the cold snap of that month did more damage to the exotic plants along the south coast and the Isles of Scilly then any other winter s...
