Re: Brittany exotics!!

Very nice icon_thumleft Did you go on Brittany Ferries? If so you were lucky their strike ended! Indeed we did. They went on strike a week before our sailing from Plymouth was due. We had to change our plans and drive up to Poole which on a Friday afternoon was a nightmare drive from here. We...

Brittany exotics!!

Just spent a week in northern Brittany. It wasn't intended to be an hardy tropicals expedition but when there are mature palms and musas growing everywhere, and echiums sprouting like weeds, photos were taken!! The food is damn good too!!! Climate is similar to Cornwall, perhaps a tad warmer and a l...

Re: 2012 - The summer that never was?

Yikes, the long range outlook and climate models look pretty grim reading for July. Seriously depressing, I don't think we ever really got out of winter down here. Cloudy most days, wet most days, temps low to mid teens with the occasion treat of 20c. I think our highest temperature so far has been ...

Re: Bedding plant (seeds) suggestions

Thanks for the suggestions. I did sow some dahlias late last year, June I believe which gave me a late bloom of flowers in September right through until end of November. Have dahlias in the beds already, they went out about two months ago along with Cosmos. I just had some spaces to fill and brighte...

Bedding plant (seeds) suggestions

I'm looking for some quick and easy plants to put in some semi-shade and full sun beds under trees and beside a wall and driveway. If it is not too late I would prefer to seed them in the greenhouse and then pop them out in the beds next month or whenever they are ready. Reason being, I avoid puttin...

P.Canariensis in containers

Will the Phoenix Canariensis grow ok in a large container? I had a decent size plant (5ft) growing in the garden, unfortunately the unrelenting rain and wind has taken it toll on the fronds and the poor thing looks a mess. I did not pay much for the plant and decided to uproot the thing and put it i...

Re: Storm warning to all forum members?

I was away last week when the storm struck down here. Came home a few days later to find my Musas and Cannas shredded, some snapped. Also lost a 6ft Cordyline, the wind had pulled up and broken the roots. Lost a lot of recently planted out cosmos and dalhias too.. Sad times! Today, yet another Decem...

Re: Asda Trachycarpus's

Won't even bother looking down here. Whenever Asda, Tesco, B&Q etc have some bargain plants for sale they always seem to exclude this part of Cornwall!! I read on Hotukdeals that Tesco was selling 6ft Olive Trees for £10. Our local store certainly won't have those, it's not worth the disappointment ...

Re: Weather Ahead, Finally Could This Be? Heres Mine :)

Getting jealous. Cloudy as usual down here, temps low to mid teens. Been cloudy since Monday. Looks as though the nice weather will miss us again. I bet the Cornish tourism brochures fail to mention the 364 days a year of cloud and rain here!!! Cornwall boasts the perfect climate for growing mould a...

Dahlia and Comos seedlings

First time I have grown these from seed, getting quite big in the greenhouse and taking up valuable space. Think it would be safe to put them out? The crappy cool weather and persistent rain makes me think it might be too early still. Hard to believe they included Cornwall in the drought! The dahlia...

Re: Heating greenhouses (polycarbonate)

Yep, I rigged up a small fan heater in my poly greenhouse. Lowest temperature was about 8C and the heater wasn't on all that much, my electric bill barely changed with this one. I kept the fan on quite a lot to keep the air moving and prevent rot. I purchased some outdoor cable, a waterproof socket ...

Re: Morrab, Penzance

I've seen Plantaholics on Ebay, but had no idea where they are. Must pay them a visit sometime. :-) Any idea where Cornwall Chillis Direct are? I suspect near Camborne somewhere. Morrab Gardens are lovely, aren't they. I love PZ, my kinda town. If it's the place I'm thinking of they are down near C...

Herbs

Looking to grow some hardy herbs that can be left out during the winter months. Down here (and probably other areas) Rosemary grows like weeds. I was just wondering how hardy Thyme is and whether that can be left alone to it's own devices during the winter? Basil, Coriander and most others appears t...
