Is my Washy dead?

Just checked on a couple of washingtonias beside Sunderland docks in someones garden and they are doing well even after the beast from the east. They havent got any damage at all. There is a phoenix around the corner from them in a more exposed location that has more damage but still alive and well....

Agave americana hardiness

Do anyone know how hardy Agave americana is and is the variegated form as hardy? I have one planted in the garden and a couple in pots and they all made it through the winter unscathed. The only protection they had was a piece of ply board leaning against the fence with the Agaves underneath. They w...

Washingtonia robusta hardiness rating (Unprotected)

My washy that I bought in 2012 as a small seedling got through its first winter outside and it was our worst winter for years. It is planted against a south east facing fence and was covered over with a tomato grow house with the door open at the back near to the fence so it had protection from rain...

Flowering Phoenix canariensis_CIDP in Sunderland

Thought I’d lost my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP after the last winter (The Beast from the East). It looked fine when I uncovered it in the beginning of April then a few weeks later I noticed the newest leaves were dying and it spear pulled. The crown was all rotting inside and it stunk. I tried to remo...

Re: Is my Washy dead?

That was a good system of protection to use where you are, Adam. It clearly worked. . I know of 2 other Washingtonias in Sunderland near the coast that have never been protected by anything other than their location. I drove past a couple of months ago to see if it got through the last winter ok an...

Re: Is my Washy dead?

I planted a small one last year in and protected it with one of those tomato grow houses with the door open at the back close to the fence so there was some air circulation to prevent condensation and mold and even though we had the worst winter for years with the beast from the east, it has made it...

Re: Palms and other tropicals for northern england

The ground was frozen solid around the palm for a few days and some of the leaf edges turned brown after that cold snap but its still alive and finally showing signs of growth which I think is a good result considering I'm in sunderland. I tied up the fronds and put hay around the trunk and near the...

Re: Palms and other tropicals for northern england

My Phoenix canariensis_CIDP has finally grown. I bought it last April and planted it in the ground but it did nothing all summer then I protected it in winter with one of those cheap plastic grow houses and it took -9 on a couple of nights with some leaf burn. I've been checking all summer for growt...

Re: When do people uncover palms?

[quote="cordyman"]Watch this video Adam, you'll see some of the large Haxnix bags on my cordyline's, and some of the medium bags on my Yucca and Phoenix canariensis_CIDP The plastic grow house that you have your potted washy in is the same type I'm using for my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP and...

Re: When do people uncover palms?

I've only seen the small fleece bags. Can they be kept in fleece bags all winter and how much protection do they give?

Re: When do people uncover palms?

I might try that. As long as I can secure it with tape.
