Welcome back HTUK

Is this site dead? I didn't visit for a good while but when I left it was an amazing forum! Every time I tried to come back it was down! I actually thought it had been shut down permanently at one point! I am back on now and it's a shadow of what it used to be! So sad. I learned everything from the ...

Spanish Moss.

Jungle up your bathroom! A couple years back I stuck a 3.5ft gnarly lump of tree trunk in my bathroom and planted it up with bromeliads. You know? Like normal people do? I bought two Spanish moss plants to add and help fill some gaps. They grew slow for a bit then suddenly went F....ing mental! The ...

Need some advice about a bird!

My question is about my Strelitzia Nicolai. See what I did there? Hilarious! I have a Nicolai that has gone mental since the day I bought it about one and a half years ago. It's now roughly 8.5 to 9 feet tall but it's still in it's original 25cm pot! Any of you folks have any tips for re potting it?...

Re: your motivation and style...

I'm personally not trying to recreate anything in particular I just like plants that reminiscent of warm distant places. In all honesty my love of tropical looking plants comes from my love of the Caribbean, but the plants I have mostly come from the far east or Europe (I know there are a lot of pla...

Re: chamaerops humilis from B&Q

I was surprised to find a decent price in B&Q to be fair. I have been looking for a nice bushy one for a while but any nurseries around me that have them at that size want a lot more for them.

chamaerops humilis from B&Q

I was at B&Q this weekend and picked up a 6 ft plus chamaerops (1.5 ft largest trunk) for £60. Not sure if they will be the same in other stores as It was way bigger than the rest they had at the same price. I'm guessing they go by pot size and this one has clearly out grown its pot. Just a head...

Re: Why are the leaves like this? Trachycarpus New Purchase

The new one looks like it hasn't had as much exposure to the elements as your other one. Mine got a kicking in that wind the other week and looks pretty sorry for its self at the mo, but my neighbour has a larger one planted probably 200 yards away and it looks immaculate. I'm guessing he has better...

Re: how to keep slugs & snails out & the cats alive

I had a lot of success using beer traps. I sunk a soup pot into the ground so it was level and stuck some cheep lager in it and it worked ok, but then I got a tip which was to cover the pot with something like a ridge tile just to make a little roof and the traps where 10 times more effective. I gue...

Random question (Musa Basjoo)

Should I be worried about mushrooms growing in my Musa Basjoo pots. They are inside.

Re: Trachycarpus fortunei trunk types Survey

This is Trunky with a thicker trunk. Last stripped in 2008, from memory. Needs 3 feet of fibre taken off over the next few weeks, but not while an easterly is blowing, as windchill is terrible up a ladder. I don't suppose you will be doing a video of this when you strip the rest? I would certainly ...

Re: Looking for pointers.

The large Trachycarpus I got from Hyde Cottage palms and had it delivered. The Small plants are things I have been rescuing from clearance and stuff.

I will start buying the bulk of the stuff I want when the weather gets better. :D

Re: Looking for pointers.

So I made a few purchases :).

Hopefully work will be starting on the garden soon so I will post some before and after shots.

Re: Looking for pointers.

Thanks for all the pointers guys :) Does anybody know what kind of plants are safe for me to buy at this time of year to keep potted ready to go in the ground in spring. I want to get some stuff started so when the garden is done I have immediate impact. I already have a couple of palms, musa basjoo...
