Anyone fancy a bit of digging??

I think being in a nice London suburb, so close to a house and in what looks like a very sheltered spot, it will probably be growing maybe 9/10 months of the year. You may find the owner has trimmed any pups around the base to keep it single trunk? I've seen some biggies like this with single trunk ...

Anyone fancy a bit of digging??

Tropic Plunder wrote: Sat Jan 19, 2019 9:36 pm Wow... what a bargain! I'd have thought Trachycarpus given the size?
Pretty sure it's a Chammy, based on leaf shape, growing point and trunk made mostly of old stem bases and not all furry! Which makes it even more of a bargain ……… IF you can get it our and transport it!!

Anyone fancy a bit of digging??

This looks like an absolute beauty - 8m Chammy from what I can make out.

Good luck getting the rootball out and will need a flat bed and hoist to move it - but for £100 that is one hell of a plant!!

Nuts About Jungles.... Again

Don't take it personally, things have gotten a bit quiet here since the forum was offline for months and the last few years of posts got wiped. I think a fair few people moved over to the Facebook page, although I don't find it that useful as no information is retained so you can't search for anythi...

Re: How much room do new bamboo culms need?

Thanks Adam. Do you think it is possible to somehow remove the culms down to the rhizome and allow the established system underneath to remain and put up new culms? I'm a little worried about coring out the entire centre and taking the rhizomes and roots wholesale. Appreciate in time the mature oute...

How much room do new bamboo culms need?

Another bamboo question I'm afraid! I have just had a real hack at another Fargesia clump that I bought. It is several years old and had clearly never been thinned at all. As a result, it was jam-packed with short or loads of old dead culms. No light would be getting in there at all. There are...

Re: Which Bamboo is best as a hedge?

Concrete - how tall is your scabrida now? Got any pics? I have a couple of pots that are fairly dense but only 25cm or so tall - wondering how many seasons they'll need to get up to 2m plus, as that will influence where I put them! Andy - as for bamboos, if you don't go the Fargeia route, there's a ...

Re: Robusta Campbell - snapping culms breaks my heart :- (

They look great! Love the hairy culms, and a really good size to them - can see they will be tall ones!

Would have thought the wood plan would work nicely, as long as it is a tight fit as otherwise they'll just find a way to push between the two and shove the wood out I'm sure!

Warm watering .......

Have seen plenty of references to using heated water for palms and other exotics. What are the benefits (theoretical or proven!) of using warm over cold? And more to the point, is there a simple way of getting a decent volume of warm water (or do you just attach your hose to a hot/mixer tap?)? Perha...

Re: Today's acquisition ........

There are a few showing. Sadly a couple got 'topped' when I was clearing old sheaths and trying to access the old culms to thin it out, but sure there will be more.

As for being rufa ........ do yours have green and yellow culms Adam? And new culms coming up almost black? drunken_smilie1

Re: Today's acquisition ........

Thanks Blairs and Cordy - really pleased with it myself. Love getting a headstart by getting some mature specimens for immediate impact - call me impatient! Pretty certain it is a Fargesia by the leaf formation and culm diameter, would just love to know which one! Will get plenty of sun where ...

Yep, agreed. Gave it a good soaking after these photos, and rain due next few days but will be back out there with the pipe should any day this week be dry.

Re: Today's acquisition ........

Thanks for the advice guys. Duly listened to and some significant thinning completed today. Loads of 'dead wood' in there and some feeble culms, so plenty more space now for the emerging ones. Decided to keep it all as one slab as it gives it a nice mature look I think. Will be interesting to see th...

Re: Today's acquisition ........

Indeed Rob, it is more the wait for them to get there, and whether the density would be replicated that I'm worried about.

Particularly as I had to cut the rootstock a lot shallower than I would have liked, I'm thinking it might sulk this year even with some food and a nice bed of compost!
