I like them, I dont go mad but they can do a job in tough spaces, H.argutifolia can be quite impressive and is easy from seed (if sown fresh)

I would use Clivia if I could get away with it! But I have also seen forms of coloured leaved Tradescantia looking good on Madeira

If they have gone brown you can cut them off but its not necessary and leaving the skirt of dead leaves can add winter protection for the crown, having said that I prefer to cut them off !

If its Dicksonia antartica , just make sure you water heavily especially in the crown, you really cant over water these!

I think we had it in the past, but called some sort of Broom (it was a long time ago!) I seem to remember you had to keep cutting bits out to get it to regenerate or it became woody and unproductive and looked tatty. It behaved a lot like Ozothamnus and Rosemary
