Re: Warm watering .......

An easier (& cheaper) alternative is to fill a kiddies paddling pool up in a sunny spot & then by the evening time the water will be reasonably warm, easy enough to dunk your watering can in to water stuff too...

Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

Pardon me, while I gloat, Nathan. Not often will we do better than Malta this time of year. Today an all-day sun. Gentle ESE breeze average 15k/hr Maximum 20.0c I will studiously omit to mention our sun index, however  Yep nice warm spell in the UK, Portsmouth was a similar temperature to her...

Re: THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

Yes even where I was living (8 miles north of Portsmouth) we didn't get as much snow as the winter of 1982. But I remember a photo my Dad took of the overflow pipe from our bathroom that had been leaking water for a while into a big white bucket on the ground, it had massive long icicles hanging fro...

Ah ok thanks, so they are meant to lose their leaves then. They are beautiful trees & the one not far from me has some seed pods on it, hmmmm... icon_thumright

Re: THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

It did get cold in Brighton too... I have had a look on the Met Office database & the weather station called 'Brighton No.2', which was situated at the allotments in Whitehawk Hill Road, recorded the following maximum & minimum temperatures over the cold snap: 11/01/87 Max: 0.8C Min: -6.7C 12/01/87 ...

in that case, you should bid on one of these! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PHOENIX-CANAR ... 4617c11a72 I always wonder how they get them to grow that big in those tiny pots? Because everybody says they stall when the root space is limited and romp away once planted in the ground. They are field grown...

Re: Bougainvillea Sanderiana

I have seen a few growing outside in central London & have grown them myself outside in Portsmouth. You need a hot & sunny south facing wall, that is also in an extremely sheltered spot & very well draining soil. If you could keep it dry during the winter it may do ok in Southampton. It will probabl...

Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

You don't really see any deciduous trees here in Malta, so pretty much everything is in leaf year round. The one exception that I can think of is a large Delonix regia (Royal Poinciana) outside a hotel, don't know if they are deciduous anyway, or just here as it's probably growing right at the edge ...

Re: THE FORGOTTEN WINTER? THE BIG FREEZE OF 1987.

It was a record breaking cold winter for many parts of the south coast, with lots of normally mild spots getting unheard of temperatures, for example: Tresco -7.2C Southsea -8.0C Torquay -7.8C Penzance -9.9C Portland -10.4C Weymouth -9.8C Hopefully we wont get a winter like that again icon_thumright
