Aloe striatula came back from -10c here so would be fine where you are, as would quite a few agaves and opuntias.

Could be ailanthus altissima or a rhus typhina by the looks of it.
Both spread readily and the ailanthus 'tree of heaven' is said to poison plants nearby. Both great lookin plants though.
In fact, looking again at my rhus, i'd go for ailanthus

They're not recovering from winter, they're recovering from being dug up last year while the bed was redone. It must have been to do with the roadworks

When i bought mine a few years ago it was around 7 foot tall and covered in flower buds. I let it do it's thing and flower, the scent was amazing. I think there was a thread on this plant or similar on GOTE recently. It was a great plant in a wooded area in the UK looked amazing and had survived unprotected in the UK at least -10 I think Anybody see this or am I imagining it?
