Sonchus from seed
I have grown most of the 'dendro-sonchus' often with seed from rareplants.eu . It is nearly always viable. They don't like heat though, so at this time of year I wouldn't use 'extra' heat. Of all the species I've grown, fruticosus is actually the best and the only one that is fairly reliably hardy u...

Closing the HTUK Forum
Huge thanks to Aidan and Dave for all the work they put in over the years.
Nothing can fill the specific niche that will be left, but Growing on the Edge offers a more serious alternative, and Pushing the Borders is a small [currently Cornwall biased] chatty forum.
I'll miss HTUK.
Chad.

Eucalyptus Robusta- Red Mahogany
Welcome to the board Westener! The stunning silence with which you have been met suggests you have caught us all out with a tree none of us have grown. I note it isn't listed as available in the RHS Plantfinder nor its on line version. The 'go to' source for UK commercial Eucalyptus are Hardy Eucaly...

Tree fern is scorched and no new fronds
On a five year old sporeling Dicksonia antarctica that is under potted [15L and it has about 8 inches of trunk] I got ten new leaves last year, and they were only about 12 inches long.
It either needs a much bigger pot and feeding or to be planted out!

Tree fern is scorched and no new fronds
I've just been out to count. On a well established Dicksonia antarctica growing in the soil in shade, but not particularly moist, I had 37 new leaves last year. It is just possible that it was half that many and I've counted two years worth though! This was grown from spore about 15 years ago and no...

And as an after thought, if you are cutting back hard, the bare stem between where you cut and the leafy head is worth potting in sections too, they often root and then shoot even from quite old and 'chunky' sections. Not guaranteed, but worth a go!

Personally I would pot it into a multipurpose/perlite 50:50 compost, but I know of people who always root Schefflera in water in glass vessels on their window sills.
And welcome to the board,

Tree fern is scorched and no new fronds
That is a recently imported Dicksonia antarctica trunk and probably has no [or few] roots regrowing from the trunk yet. The pot it is potted in is not big enough for it to grow enough root to support a head of leaves. The 'outer pot' would do it for a year or two. If you have a place to plant it out...

Schefflera delavyi pruning/propogation
As with all cutting back it sometimes goes wrong but usually Schefflera resprout even from old wood. The 'head' will make a good cutting, but they are sometimes slow to root so need a frame or case to keep humidity up around the leaves until there is root formed. I reduce the leaves drastically on t...

It is not known to me either.
The Plant List gives several synonyms, but they are all unfamiliar to me as well!
It is interesting how it looks like the unrelated Carmichaelia williamsii. Convergent evolution at work?

Must say your S.enneaphylla looks grand and not something i've come across. Will have to try and source one. I think Mark Fillan who runs Tuckermarsh Nursery in Devon has them. He seems to have stopped retail trade, but is worth contacting if Crug don't have it anymore. There are pictures of it in ...

An exciting and timely post, I have a S.enneaphylla that needs 'cutting back' and air layering the longer stems looks a good option before hand!
How much, if at all, did you wound the stem and did you use a rooting hormone?

I have a small 'Ice Crystal' ... does any one know if it fruits well? Mine is still small and hasn't fruited yet. On line sites say it has small sweet fruit that look like this if it has a hot summer. When it was new to cultivation it was thought to be a form or hybrid of the shrubby Ficus afghanis...

Tree fern, fig, brug and the rest changes year on year. Fig, I had forgotten the indispensable hardy fig. Great, big and tough leaves that have the grace to drop off for the winter so they don't hang around to get too battered. I grow 'Adam' which is reputed to have the largest leaves, but mine get...
