... decided to finally do an arid bed. Dig out all of the gritty soil and replace it with 100% grit and get some agave's in, my aloe polyphylla and a yucca rostrata etc and the astelia is slap bang in the middle of the bed.

yucca linearis
thinking of buying a yucca liearis how have members gone on with them this very wet winter.i was going to plant it high of the soil level and then dome it up with soil hopefully to aid draiage.any replies or advice appreciated.

Its not just any fence, its a double pallisade ie it will filter / diffuse and slow the wind. A solid fence just causes turbulence and can make it calm directly behind the fence but much worse a little way from the fence.

Thanks for the info....yikes about one getting its head snapped off behind a fence. I've just potted both mine for now outside and will move indoors when the weather starts to turn. I'm hoping to plant into the ground next April/may with lots of grit (10mm gravel) and slope it away for water to run ...

Yes! I am not sure what made my brain say flaccida! the banks around the airport on Madeira are covered with it, never had any luck with the seed though

First one looks like a Furcraea although it could be one of the variegated Yucca and the second looks like Yucca possible flaccida

Hi my Sikkimensis came through winter fine as i described for the Basjoo in the Banana section. You can cut the point off the Yucca cut just above the leaf if you so wish. Nice collection though
