Re: Australias hottest year on record

Perth had an overnight minimum of 29.7c last night! It was still 36c at midnight and at 9.00am today the temperature is already 39c!

Interesting polar atmospheric feature

Spotted this really interesting dipole type of cyclonic circulation right over the North Pole at 10hPa (~26000m) accompanied by two adjacent cyclonic features all with incredibly high wind speeds (+370km/hr): http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/10hPa/orthographic=-215.80,90.51,398 Ive...

If its a few hundred years old then that would make it Elizabethan...were they into anything as exotic as olives back then?? Peacocks tongue & olive tapenade perhaps?

Re: Australias hottest year on record

A lot of the record breaking hot weather around the country happened at the start of 2013 and yes I think that it hasnt been a particularly hot start to summer in the south so far, but Darwin recorded its hottest January day on record at over 36c yesterday and the same forecast for today! To...

Re: Cyclone Tracy - Christmas Day 1974

You got out at the right time Bill! That cyclone in Townsville was Cyclone Althea, up until Tracy had the record for the lowest air pressure ever recorded on the Australian mainland. Not for long, Tracy not only beat the record but smashed it! It was an extraordinary meteorological event on a world ...

Cyclone Tracy - Christmas Day 1974

On the morning of the 39th anniversary of Australias worst natural disaster, and with your own scary Christmas weather in the UK I thought Id post some video and an original news reel from the event with some footage of the aftermath of the cyclone. Even though the "official" recording was winds of ...

Re: Yet another storm 23-12-13

Wow thats really starting to ramp up! A very well structured and intense cyclone that is, it makes me wonder why these big extra-tropical cyclones arent named like tropical cyclones, especially when they are significant like this one. Heres a shot of it on our favourite new Christmas toy: http://ear...

Re: Yet another storm

Already has wind speeds of close to 100km/hr according to the wind map toy, looks to be a very significant system! Lows of 927hPa!  and another one  If we had a low system of that intensity approaching us Id be packing up and moving inland, NOT what you want at Christma...

Re: Looks like a nice healthy Polar Vortex 22nd Dec 13

Or...you just click on "wind" in the menu

And its more than "pretty colours", its a visual representation of wind speed; blues and greens are low wind speeds while the reds and purples are high wind speeds. Makes it easier to judge wind speeds at a glance icon_thumright

Re: Looks like a nice healthy Polar Vortex 22nd Dec 13

The Polar Vortex is almost slap bang over the North Pole giving a low pressure over Iceland and sits the jet stream over us. Could this mean a milder winter, or is it still to early to tell ? http://earth.nullschool.net/#2013/12/22 ... verlay=off The link is to 250hPa (jet stream level) with the Ea...

Re: Global wind map

Yeah thanks Conifers, I was remiss in mentioning that. Personally Im a lower atmosphere kinda guy - jet streams and upper troughs and ridges leave me cold so to speak and take all the unpredictability out of weather watching and prediction. Makes it all too easy if you check whats happening u...

Global wind map

Recently came across this website with a Google Earth type thingee but showing wind speeds and patterns: http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=-279.86,-6.00,295 You can see all the frigid arctic air from a low over Iceland moving straight across the northern Atlanti...

Re: Anyone tried the snow banana -Ensete glaucum ?

I got some seed of glaucum a few years back from Thailand and had excellent germination and strong early growth before all inexplicably died after a couple of months within days of each other. Ive had this happen with every ensete Ive tried to grow, they just dont seem to like my climate. I think it...
