Re: A debate

Winters like 1963 & 1947 were cold, but not everywhere had temperatures low enough to kill Phoenix canariensis & not just on the Scillies either. Torquay has the only big mature specimen on mainland UK & the record low there is -8.9C recorded in 1947 the Phoenix survived that winter... It didn't ev...

Re: A debate

hmmm maybe, but when some photos of the ones taken last year and I posted them on another forum, someone from the south coast (around Southampton area) commented on how good they look here in comparison to there.. they must have been trippin' right? It depends where the person lived... Phoenix cana...

Re: A debate

If the CIDPs aren't a long term scenario, what are they still doing alive? A winter like 2010 should have wiped all the one up north out.. but in places they're still there - surely that qualifies them as a long term prospect. I'd argue there were smaller specimens up north than down south, but I'd...

Re: A debate

I agree that south coast has had the better of things recently, and the huge CIDPs, Butias, and in some cases Washingtonias are a testament to that, however, part of Northern England and North Wales can in some cases rival the south coast for speciments grown - it's just that the north isn't seen a...

Re: UV index 3 from ~14 March

All this talk of UV and no mention of skin cancer? Remember to keep convered up and apply sunscreen. It doesn't need to be hot and sunny for uv levels to be damaging to the skin. Yeah skin cancer in index 3... never leave the house without a tank... [ Image ] I don't use protection for indices 11 o...

Re: UV index 3 from ~14 March

And haze from pollution can actually increase UV levels too... Increase or decrease? Coastal areas also have higher UV levels due to the light reflected by the water. When you're out skiing in the Alps in the winter you can get sunburns, not only because of the altitude but also the sn*w reflecting...

Re: UV index 3 from ~14 March

Is that why us westerners can have warm Springs, when those on the east complain its cold? No, that would be dependant on wind direction. The north sea is at its coldest in early spring so an easterly wind makes the east coast cold, but this wind warms over land, so by the time it reaches the west ...

Re: UV index 3 from ~14 March

Another idea is that the UV index is stronger from south to north, this is actually not true, the UV index is actually strongest from west to east, in the British Isles - why I have no idea, but it is for some reason in my time watching the UV output. I suspect it's mixture of the Atlantic ocean an...

Re: Exotic Plants in London

Yes central London has the best climate in the whole of the UK for growing exotics IMO, it gets the hottest summer temperatures, virtually frost free most winters & doesn't have the damaging salt laden winds that coastal areas have icon_thumright

Re: February and Winter Statistics

Here in Malta February has also been above average & many days were dry, the only reason the rainfall came in around average was due to two particularly wet days... Below are the statistics for my weather station during the month of February Mean Maximum: 17.7C (+1.7C) Mean Minimum: 13.5C (+3.6C) Ov...

Re: How much is your water bill?

In the UK I paid £8 a month for water (unmetered) & £22 a month for waste water... I was dreading how much it would cost here in Malta as there are no natural water sources & all water is produced via desalination & it is metered, so you can imagine my delight when I have been paying on average just...
