Astelia grown too big

... it is a great plant. I had this year decided to finally do an arid bed. Dig out all of the gritty soil and replace it with 100% grit and get some agave's in, my aloe polyphylla and a yucca rostrata etc and the astelia is slap bang in the middle of the bed.

Welcome Josh nice part of the country you live. i also grow some plants in pots as well as the garden.
If you have dry periods that are a problem for you you could try varies arid plants like Yuccas and Agave`s.

keep it frost free pot it up in dry sand, play sand is usually sold dry. plant out when the clocks change for summer time. water well once a week . Stop watering when the clocks change for winter nothing past its lips till the clocks change for summer time. That's a humdinger :D :D

... That little corner where the conservatory butts up to the house is actually pretty sheltered, so fingers crossed with a little protection the agave will get through winter!

Hi TP, if you are going to keep it outside you could consider wrapping the pot in bubble wrap to stop the frost freezing the roots. icon_thumleft I once lost a waggy when the pot froze solid. :roll:
