Re: Unexpected recovery

You just never know. I spotted a Cordyline sending new leaves that supossedly perished after the winter of 08/09. I was shocked to see any growth as I've long since given up on it and no watering. Cheers, Barrie. As a result of winter damage I had to saw off several limbs of my large Cordyline. The...

Re: Is my new palm a washingtonia robusta?

Just been out the back to take some shots which hopefully show some of the differences between the two species. The leaf bases are more or less green in filifera but maroon in robusta. The petioles are less viciously armed in filifera than robusta and more green than their maroon counterpart. Sorry ...

Re: Yet another unremarkable summer

Somebody was right when they said that as soon as the hosepipe ban came into force up here then it's rained almost every day. Been rather cool since then as well with limited sunshine. Trying to be positive, at least the treeferns and my Nikau have enjoyed this type of weather. Oh, and before I forg...

Re: Fasicularia bicolor

Funnily enough I bought a fairly large one of these on the weekend.

I've seen them growing happily on Scilly and was wondering if anybody has managed to keep one planted outside up here in NW England.

If not , it's going to stay in the pot in my cold greenhouse over the winter.

Cheers

Roscoea ID please

The wife and I came across a garden centre on the Wirral selling a Roscoea sp with 'purple' being the only aid to ID on the label. The staff were very helpful but couldn't narrow it down to species/variety. So any suggestions would be gratefully received. The flower is about 3.5cm at its widest poin...

Siting a Musa basjoo

I bought a small Musa basjoo a couple of weeks ago at Akamba. It's doubled in size in just that time after repotting and now stands about 2 feet tall above compost level. I really would like to plant it outside asap but the only really suitable spot is perhaps too small for it. It's against a south ...

Re: King Protea cultivation

Many thanks for the suggestions and help. Sounds like it's going to be impossible to keep one alive outside through the winter especially if they're going to continue like the past two have been. I'm going to be particularly careful with regard to using fertiliser and I'll get some dried blood from ...

King Protea cultivation

I recently bought a small King Protea at Akamba. It was about 6inches in height at the time but has now doubled in size. What I would like to know is should I pinch out the growing point to encourage side shoots as I don't want to end up with a tall, leggy plant. Any other cultivation advice would b...

Re: Any sign of a dahlia yet?

I started two tubers in the conservatory back in March and later moved them to the greenhouse. I can't remember where I got them from and they're labelled just as Dahlia 'white'. They've been flowering for over two weeks and I've had to dead head them a couple of times already. To me this seems incr...

Canna 'picasso' virus? and Banana id

Hello everyone, Please go easy on me as this is my first post :) I'll try to post a pic of the largest leaf of this Canna and would welcome any comments as to my suspicions that it's got a virus. If is thought to be infected should I destroy it straight away or leave it and hope it won't be too seri...

Re: Get the fleece out

I used to live by the sea in south west wales and found that the most severe damage to plants was done by a combination of subzero temps and wind. Many large cordylines were taken out by temps only a little below freezing but with a breeze. This leads to a far more penetrating frost than that caused...

Pride of Madeira

I regularly visit the Isles of Scilly where I do a lot of birdwatching (being a twitcher) and marvel at the wonderful array of exotic plants that don't just grow outside, but thrive in the mild climate. It's hard to beleive at times that you're somewhere in the British Isles. I wish I could afford t...

Re: Woolly Aphids on Palm roots

Just a quick update to say that the deed is done and I've spayed the coiled up roots with a good soaking of Ultimate Bug Killer. Fingers crossed that this'll work and won't cause any harm to the plant. On another note, I've decided to abandon my silly username  and re-register using my proper ...

Re: Woolly Aphids on Palm roots

Thanks for the info Ed. I guess that the palms are pot bound and on the dry side which allows air pockets to develop around some of the roots and allows mealy bugs to flourish. Perhaps when they start to actively grow it's time to pot them on and keep them moister. Meanwhile Provado should keep the...
