Cyathea hardiness

Out of the Cyatheas which we can get hold of in this country, how do people rate their hardiness & what minimum protection has got them through the last winter? I believe the Australis is the hardiest? (although I've not yet grown it) followed by cooperii, I have 2 which are flourishing at the m...

Cyathea treefern hardiness in the UK?

I have had excellent results with Dicksonia antarctica here in Vancouver Canada (USDA zone 8a/b) so decided to branch out into the genus Cyathea. I obtained spores from Tasmania for C. australis, C. medullaris , and C. cunninghamii and after 2 long years now have sporophytes (main plants) ...

Cyathea Cunninghamii

Has anyone else on this forum ever experimented with this Cyathea? I purchased some spore from Chilterns Seeds about five, six years ago and ended up with about 50 young plants. I have given a few away and lost some others but I have fifteen young plants ...

Cyathea Medullaris

Hi I brought my Cyathea Medullaris at the tail end of last summer from Trevena Cross. I have had it protected in the greenhouse all winter. My question is, when do I cut the old brown fronds off? I have two new fronds. I really should ...

Cyathea Australis

On my travels yesterday I found a small GC selling a 4 foot Cyathea Australis for £220. A really beautiful specimen with fronds cut off but croziers forming well. I'd been past this GC a few times and noticed it with fronds on but not been in to realise ...

Cyathea australis protection (australis/cooperi IDs)

I have a potted trunkless cyathea australis I bought at the Akamba meet. Should I bring it undercover or will it be OK in a sheltered spot with some fleece around the growing point?

I think ive killed my Cyathea medullaris :(

Hey guys, Well it looks like ive managed to kill my Cyathea medullaris- I molly coddled it for 2 winters now and stupidly this winter I let it dry out as it was in a plastic greenhouse (mental note do not do that again!). The first 2 croziers that ...

At last a Cyathea Medullaris

... plants, for the window boxes and the one hanging basket I have. Much to our delight we came across a longed-for tree fern in the shape of a Cyathea Medularis which we just had to buy whatever the cost. We got the Brugmansia, a variegated Alocasia, two nice ferns, some nice non-virused Cannas ...

Cyathea medullaris rotten crozier

Hi, I've recently bought a sporeling (fairly big already, starting to form a little stem I guess) of Cyathea medullaris. After uncurling some fronds nicely one frond did not uncurl, and after feeling it, it turned out to be mushy and soft, it was rotten! I've removed it, ...

Cyathea Australis

Decided to take Melissa's advice and plant out my Cyathea. Its only a small 18"tall trunk and has already spent last winter outside. It is starting to throw out its first croziers so I want to get it in the ground quickly. My question is the ...

Cyathea Cooperi

I was just wondering who else might be growing this wonderful tree fern? Have any of you guys brought them back from Madeira? I have been growing C. cooperi outside for now for 3 or 4 years. They always get totally defoliated by the first frost but always come back to life in the spring! I have one ...

Cyathea Australis

Had a wonder round the garden yesterday and was very supprised to see the Australis has fronds about 9ins long already. It is normally the first to frond up but this is early even for Australis.
