Re: The westerly winds is not going to last this winter.

I would also be very concerned about the wool. I started off last winter using wool in my tree ferns but it very quickly became water logged....VERY water logged so ditched it. Straw much better I think. As for mine, the pot was put on top of the mesh support that was packed with straw (about 10&quo...

One of my larger potted Trachys has yellowing tips on a couple of the leaves. What causes this please? I plan to plant in the ground come spring. Just don't want to lose it through the winter

Re: How I'm protecting my banana (musella lasiocarpa)
Last winter i spent ages building a wire cage and stuffed it full of straw to try and protect my five foot banana. Not a chance.....died right back to the base. :( Did the straw get wet Tom? No I covered it with a large plastic pot with air holes to deflect the rain. I think it was just the cold......

Re: Dicksonia antarctica's to de-frond or not
Good information here. If we have a milder start to winter (Even for the whole winter) then the fronds are likely to stay green and continue to photosynthesise in some way so always best to leave on and just to pack the crown if/when cold is forecast. I will be leaving mine on for as long as possibl...

Re: Negative NAO phase to end soon?
On the other hand, it's beneficial we get the high pressure dominated spell out on the way now, in fact it could work in our way, if High pressure spells are NWly dominated then we may be spared harsh frosts, and go into winter with a +NAO and Atlantic weather. I dont want to speak to soon but I ha...
