Re: Fremontedendron question

Yes it is south facing Dave. The wall is the neighbour's garage so it gets no artificial heat, just what it absorbs in daytime, but it has provided enough protection so far - I think it's actually had two winters now, and it would have just been a twig for the first one. I can't really see an altern...

Re: Aeonium arboreum 'Schwarzkopf

They are really easy to propagate - cut a rosette off with a bit of stem and stick it in some gritty compost, or probably just about anything else.

Looks really nice Cordy, and another thumbs up for that black eyed susan. Still don't believe you have a shed though :) .

Re: Fremontedendron question

It has flowered pretty much all year Kata, and seems to be a bit tougher than I'd read. It's supposed to be hardy down to -5 C, but it certainly got below that last winter here.

Fremontodendron question

I have a Fremontedendron growing against a brick wall, supported by a wooden trellis. The stem is now over an inch thick, and growing. It weaves between the trellis rails and is ok at the moment, but it looks like next year it will start to try and push itself free, damaging itself and the trellis a...

Re: Echium, I wasn't prepared for this to grow so big...

I've been trying to get them through outside in winter for years without success, it's just that bit too cold here. I don't know of an easy way to protect them and wouldn't bother with anything elaborate. Good video Kris icon_thumleft . I've never noticed how much they droop & recover (before th...

Re: Tropical Torquay

Great video CP, thanks for posting it icon_thumleft. We visited Torquay a few years ago, I remember being green with envy at what they can grow. We didn't bother with Paignton Zoo, looks like that was a mistake.

Re: Late Summer pics

Thanks for the nice comments. The walkway does seem to work well, I pinched the idea from another member's photos (Tony I think) - it's just old scaffold planks really. David - you're clearly a man after my own heart! The round leafed plant in photo 5 is giant burtterburr (petasites) which I got fro...

Re: Pictures of my garden

Very smart garden Dorothy. As a matter of fact I was thinking that the plants stand out very nicely because of the mixture of colours and forms.

Re: Paulownia tomentosa

I also suspect that tomentosa can be very variable in their vigour Neil. I bought a couple of seedlings a few years ago, kept one and gave the other away, The one I gave away grew strongly but the one I kept is a weak spindly thing that I'll probably give up on.
