Re: Crews Hill today

AAArrrrggghhh .......... everyone else got one!! Do they not normally have them in at that size then? Had presumed that kind of stock would be there a while as not a cheap whim purchase for most of the punters cruising the houses for bedding plants! And which were the ones with the blue strin...

Re: Crews Hill today

Steph ......... don't tell me that now!! One or two were labelled as Cooperi, but the others just 'large fern' so had presumed they were larger Australis as they have smaller ones for £24.99 there too (on dealbata labels but crossed out and corrected). Could see that there were at least two sp...

Yep, rootballs wrapped and soaked this morning, should be in the ground by end of the day.

Crews Hill today

Had a good look around in the sunshine today. Hillside first (as per first pics in the tunnels). Certainly very keenly priced on most stuff, plenty of decent larger specimens. Not too much in the way of tree ferns, decent selection of ground ferns, and some good sized cannas for £6 a go. Gunnera sel...

Re: New Butia beast is home! Need a feed?

As I was back at the sellers house today digging out the Trachys, so asked if the Butia was hit by any recent winters. She confirmed that in the 2010/11 they thought they'd lost it as it completely defoliated, and then it started to put some new spears up the following summer. So ......... given tha...

Re: Digging up Trachys - how much root?

Well, I picked a great day to be digging up two mature Trachys!! Was a struggle, as you all implied it would be! Access was the biggest issue, just couldn't get in to dig wide enough due to them being planted too close to fencing. Still, think I got a decent amount on both, and hopefully enoug...

Re: Echium, I wasn't prepared for this to grow so big...

Look like small tourtoiseshell to me, definitely not comma or peacock. Very strange to see them now though, usually overwinter as adults as you find them hibernating in your house and just waking up in the sun this time of year. Must be rather out of kilter with the seasons if they've been alive all...

Re: Any good garden centre in North London area?

Thanks guys. Yes, had noticed that Silktree looks tempting at first glance but based on their ebay and website they don't have that much in stock and can be a touch pricey. I'll have more than my hands full getting around Gardening Club, Hillside and Paramount methinks! icon_rambo Just need to decid...

Re: Any good garden centre in North London area?

Right, okay ....... both ways are uphill from the Gardening Club by the looks of it! Saw Hillside on the map too. Great, so I'll head for there as well once I've done the other two and see what they have Have contemplated Silktree, but yes it looks like they are only open midweek right now, so...

Re: Any good garden centre in North London area?

Either way, that is one hell of a road for nurseries!! Not sure I've ever seen so many one after the other!

I may be needing a bigger van.

Re: Any good garden centre in North London area?

Thanks both, looks like Crew Hill will be a definite stopping point!

Phat - are you sure that Paramount and Ausferns are not one in the same, given that Paramount is also just past Crew, up the hill, on the right?? icon_geek

Any good garden centre in North London area?

Am heading down to Cheshunt on Sunday to dig out these two large Trachys that I have found, and so am taking a van with me. Just wondering if there are any good garden centres down there worth checking out while I have loads of space to bring stuff back. Paramount plants is very close by so may well...

Re: New Butia beast is home! Need a feed?

You're right, no steps for me, but did take three men to get it our of the car (where it was horizontal obviously) and onto the ground, then it moved fairly easily on a sack-truck over some lumpy ground and then down into the garden. How I'm going to get it out of that pot I don't know - probably wi...

Re: Digging up Trachys - how much root?

Thanks Brendan, had done a search but you topic hadn't shown up so that's a really useful reference to see how much root you took. I'll have to second guess the size to pre-dig the holes in their new home before I go to collect. These are in a back garden, so can't pull them out with anything mechan...
