Re: Planting ideas for a new border.
The border has been planted with plants I already had in pots, so hopefully they will be happy despite that many of them are sun lovers in a relatively shady border. Further research of the sun and shadows has made me aware that it does get the sun after mid afternoon, so I hope that's enough. The p...

Re: Cheshirepalms blog - New fence and new borders.
Basjoo unwrapped today with the promise of some warm weather over the weekend, should dry out nicely now. Days off on Monday and Tuesday, so can finish the borders off and commence planting, weather permitting!

Re: your arid beds
The Opuntia is a Phaecantha and tough as old boots. You can see the fruit resulting from last years flowers. A mean looking plant with a softer side. That's a brilliant arid bed, I have some Opuntia to go in mine when I do it later this spring. Whats underneath the gravel on the top? Soil or a mixt...

Re: Yorkshire Kris blog March gardening, sleeper video 2
Its really coming along now! The drainage should be excellent at the top part of your garden for succulents and cacti, is that the plan? Bog type plants like gunnera at the bottom? That is exactly the plan although I'm debating whether to have the arids somewhere else..... Maybe the front garden or...

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.
The problem is I have a lot of sun lovers in pots, the sun went in early afternoon today, so I need to see if its gets sun as it moves around later in the day, hopefully so, or else I will be looking at shade plants.

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.
The fence is now in and work can start, however I didn't really consider the shadow the fence casts when I was thinking about planting. This photo is at solar noon today and 6 months of the year will get less sun than this.

Re: Cheshirepalms blog - Its Spring time to cut the grass!
Been out grafting digging the new border today and extended some of the other ones, still loads to do though! Only done up to the washing line at which point my girlfriend said we should have a semi-circular patio there, I'm weighing it up to be honest. No planting yet, didn't have time today even i...

Re: Cheshirepalms blog - Its Spring time to cut the grass!
could you give the back of the fence a cheeky coating of heavy duty stain? I regret not doing mine before it was fitted The new one? Its pressure treated and good for 15 years apparently. The panels should just slide out and be easy to paint if I want too. Need to see how it looks first once its up...

Re: Cheshirepalms blog - Its Spring time to cut the grass!
It will be fine I'm sure, the guy who came was admiring the palms and the stuff is no where near it really. It will be on the edge of the border when its finished. I'm just irritated that I'm away tomorrow till Sunday night, so can't get started till at least Monday. I want things doing straight awa...

Re: Yorkshire Kris blog March gardening, the sun came out.
Are you planting the Washingtonia in the ground? Possibly. It's not that heavy to move about yet in the pot but will need an even bigger pot next summer. It will have a limited life if/when it gets planted out though. You never know, your new garden might be very sheltered when its planted up and c...
