New from Hereford

... have had a bit more success with them over the last few. I have a 20 foot Trachycarpus that has lived here almost as long as me, a musa basjoo and sikkimensis, I have tried colocasia not with much success at overwintering yet. I am currently trying to overwinter bilbergia nutans which I have planted ...

... Bananas. My Musa Yunnanensis and Cheesemani both Doubled in size. My Basjoo barely put on 10cm but has started to grow already along with my Sikkimensis. My fastest growing palm is Trachycarpus Nanus, 7 or so new leaves last year and it is still pushing them out now. As is my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP, ...

... which I have in a cold greenhouse for the winter. I have over the last couple of decades grown the giant bird of paradise and Musa hookerii ( sikkimensis) from seed with success. My Ensete murellii is in a cold conservatory for its third year to keep it ticking over. I have the usual cannas, ...

Hi my Sikkimensis came through winter fine as i described for the Basjoo in the Banana section. You can cut the point off the Yucca cut just above the leaf if you so wish. Nice collection though

... Red Robin 1 x Salvia 2 x Musa Basjoo 3 x Hosta I also planted some Rudbekia and Crocosmia from seed so will see how these get on. I want a Musa Sikkimensis too but I dubious after uncovering the Basjoo and finding it was rotten. If everything settles in then the garden should look really good ...

is it time ?

Ive brought my variegated tanee (and pups) in as it got shredded in the strong winds. Sikkimensis and basjoo stay out permanently anyway. Hiniba and maurelli are still out but will come in at a later date when proper winter sets in.

Most wind resistant banana plants please

I only have experience of growing two different banana species outside here in my exposed lancs garden. These are Musa basjoo and Musa sikkimensis Red Tiger. Of the two. the M.sikkimensis has decidedly more robust leaves than the far more familiar M.basjoo. As a consequence, they don't tear ...

Most wind resistant banana plants please

... but since no one else has answered... The only one that doesn't get shredded here in Cornwall is Musella lasiocarpa. Musa basjoo, 'Tibet', and sikkimensis have proved hardy. Ensete ventricosum is hardy here for about three out of four years without protection; I lost it this last winter. The ...

Winter 2017/2018 Beast from the East survivors

All my tender stuff was kept in my polyhouse so thankfully all survived. I have noticed that my musa sikkimensis are really struggling though and they were in my polyhouse. I lost a couple of basjoo which I risked not protecting but I wrapped everything else and all survived. ...

Re: Musa "Mekong Giant"

looking at it all year round it looks like basjoo and sikki look like when they get leggy with not enough light. it is like this in as much sun as it can have here so I wonder if it is just like that or if my sun is just not strong enough for it. it ...

Possibly, I've just dragged it into the conservatory now for some extra warmth, once it starts moving again and the pups put on some size I'll separate them.

This it what it looks like now.
