Agave montana are tough plants.

I have had one in a pot for 6 or 7 years and the only protection it gets in the winter is when I drag it down the side of the house under my lean to. Last winter was a cold one as well.

Well, it's almost there. This has taken almost exactly a year to get from lump at the top of the plant to ready to flower. I'm pretty convinced that this is a Montana.

Planning on repotting some agaves this season just wondering what kind of mix people use I've heard of people using things like ballast etc

Just give the plants the soil that is the contents of their pot. Its been quite an interesting experiment and the plants are thriving, lost one agave this year, too much rain!
