Great flower spike.
Agave montana are tough plants.
I have had one in a pot for 6 or 7 years and the only protection it gets in the winter is when I drag it down the side of the house under my lean to. Last winter was a cold one as well.

Well done with that! Don't suppose there are any pups at the base. Maybe you'll get plantlets on the seed heads.

Re: Agave.....almost in flower
Nice one. The only downside to flowering is that the plant dies afterwards I believe. It does look great though. The image looks okay when clicked to view full size. Agave.....almost in flower
Well, it's almost there. This has taken almost exactly a year to get from lump at the top of the plant to ready to flower. I'm pretty convinced that this is a Montana.
I can't seem to get the image upright, so my apologies for the need to neck crane!

Sounds good to me. You want something that will dry out well over winter. Clay all the way.GaryW wrote:John Innes no3 and up to 50% grit depending on whether it's a clay pot, plastic pot and if it's kept outside or not. Plastic pots and multipurpose compost is the worst combination, so avoid !

On the Continent the famous Agave collection in the City of Pau were wiped out and all the CIDPs were destroyed or turned to mush. As for snow we didn't get much in Southampton ...

Re: your arid beds
Just give the plants the soil that is the contents of their pot. Its been quite an interesting experiment and the plants are thriving, lost one agave this year, too much rain! Makes space for an aloe polyphylla. One of the Parryi is pupping nicely. In fact anything arid these days that gets potted ...
