what Palm?
looks like a phoenix roebelenii to me Jacko. you will have to bring interior for the iciness, however can be outdoor all through summer time months. caution with direct sunlight though as leaves may be badly scorched

Re: Phoenix roebelini at local GC
... 4 days of frost all winter!! All minor ones too, Will keep it in its spot and let it play out - and update later in the year on it. I saw a P. roebelenii in St. James' Park in early Feb and it was in pristine condition, but that part didn't even get one frost (not even on 20 November). My guess ...

Re: Phoenix roebelini at local GC
It isn't stretched, that is how Phoenix roebelenii fronds are meant to look. If they are grown in full sun & not given enough water they can develop shorter fronds, but these are water loving palms that do best in at least dappled sunlight...

Re: Dry conservatory ideas
May I suggest a phoenix roebelenii.I keep mine in the house during winter and on the patio during summer.Seems to tolerate a wide range of conditions and always looks pristine. If only they were slightly hardier.

Re: Phoenix roebelenii
I spotted a Phoenix roebelenii yesterday growing in front of some flats on the Eastern Road in Portsmouth, not sure how long it has been planted there but it will be interesting to see if it survives the winter as it is in quite an exposed spot...

Re: Phoenix roebelenii
Knew someone more than twenty years ago who dared to try a specimen sized one planted out in his high ground garden in Hampstead, North London. He succeeded in keeping it for some years by using thermostatically controlled heating cable and a temporary purpose built 'mini greenhouse' that was venti...

Re: Phoenix roebelenii
I've heard of some pot planting their palms and lifting them out before winter cutting all the extra roots right back to the pot. They then repot them in the next size up and put them back in the ground by the following summer. This obviously won't work with all varieties but I suspect P. roebelinii...

Re: Phoenix roebelenii
It's a summer patio plant. Not hardy for our winters. They can take full sun all day if acclimatised to it. Plunge the pot and have roots grow out the bottom into the ground. Errr, no! Don't let the roots grow out the bottom into the ground, or it'll be stuck there when the winter arrives to kill i...

There was one outside nearby from 2006 to 2008, but succumbed in 2008 and gradually declined until the owner threw it out.
