What to plant to quickly fill in huge gaps
After the dismay as many members have had big parts of their gardens destroyed, this topic is to discuss what you can plant to create a quick jungle.
I had ripped out the rampant Phylostaccys nigra and huge Hypericum hicote in 2009 as they were simply taking over half the garden. This left huge gaps and I did wonder if I had done the right thing
Here was the area in April 2010 with vast lots of space and little else. The 12 foot Musa basjoo had been cut to the ground and I was thinking I needed height. Here in mid April starting to try out plants. The large Ensete Montbeliardii placed near the back to give instant height. Here at the end of May with most plants planted out. Thses included Echuim pianini, Colocasia mammoth, Ensete Montbeliardii, Ensete Maurelii, Heliconia bihai, TRex, several Dahlia and bedding Petunia, yet to put in an appearance were the Hedychiums, and Musa basjoo which had been cut to the ground. This is the Ensete Maurelii at planting time End of June and filling out nicely Mid July Mid August Mid September Mid October Here 30th October with me as scale. The Ensete Maurelii has already been dug out and was in the conservatory. Many other plants were to follow in the next 2 weeks. I month later 30th Novemeber the first winter blizzard kicked in. It shows that we can have a really exotic garden like many Americans with harsh winters. You just have to grow the right things

Re: What to plant to quickly fill in huge gaps
I had an Echium that lost it's growing point to frost a couple of years ago, In spring time it threw out loads of shoots around the top, Ended up looking like a shrub Each shoot went on to develop a flower spike which were very unimpressive-only around 18". I have wondered since though what would have happened if I'd just left one shoot in place. Tried growing them again last year but all except one is complete mush now
Re: What to plant to quickly fill in huge gaps
echiums dont normally reshoot.... in my experience, the crown can get trashed and then it splits into various new shoots..
red if its a gonner its a gonner, go get some seed now and get some started, they grow like billy o ....
ive never had flowers the winter sees to them up here but i love the foliage, even if the stems and leaves irritate my hands

All but two are in the greenhouse. I have left a Burgundy stem out with protection so no chance with that! I have a declining Black Magic in the house.
The trouble is they divide so quickly that I have no room for them all so many just go on the compost heap.

Compost heap!....shame on you
Give me a bell before your heap any this year, I'll gladly make the trip across for some if I can.
I think I am definitely going to have to get one of these temporary poly/green houses for next winter and heat it.

Re: What to plant to quickly fill in huge gaps
I save what I can Tom but have to give preference to saving more rare/expensive plants like my Agave medio-picta and Cyantheas when space is tight (greenhouse is only 6 by 4 foot)
Later on in the year I'll have plenty. You are more than welcome to some. If you are ever popping into Leeds I can have some waiting for you as I work in the station.

Completely understand Kris. Almost certainly take you up on that offer if you have any Kris as can easily pop across to Leeds... Top man! thank you
