So in this example if you were to cut off the lower fronds as many people do, thereby removing the lowest live petioles - you heighten the growing point? Thus creating a taller growing plant as it pushes the growing point further up / but giving a shallower growing point for spear production? icon_scratch

dont think so,if i cut off the lower ones,i will just have less leaves. they die off and go brown of their own accord. id have thought you would get more growth from more leaves, better photosynthesis and all that stuff

Circular portion in the middle are the leaves or bud
the half circular portions on the outside of it represent petiole
as you will see.

Nice recovery Jim

Many thanks Di, Simon, and RedS for the artwork  on petiole query.
This is why on bananas it is known as a pseudostem. It is not realy a stem because the supporting structure is actually made of long petioles that connect directly to the corm.
So now we got explanation for Petiole, and Pseudostem. I need to save this thread.

All I need now is explanation off Dave for Pseudostream

Our warm summers really helped put this one right.

We also had a very warm spring followed by a stretch
(beginning mid May)of 70+ /80F or warmer days and
60" of rain May-Sept.
