Wind, WIND, WIND

Post by Dave Brown »

WIND, WIND, WIND
And I thought Hurricane Dean was in the Carribean. We seem to be having a scaled down version here. This really is not a good year for exotics, unless you like the look of shredded, nanas, colocasias, palms, pots always on their side, etc. :(

Fortunately as the wind is from the north my Washingtonia is protected, but it has started to defoliate hazelnut trees overnight. Colocasia plants have been blown over, and will need to be staked. Bananas... well, a joke really. My neighbour has a basjoo snapped clean off. I was going to work on my car today, but it is not pleasant outside.

We have not been flooded here, but constantly blown away. Oh, well, roll on 2008, it can't be worse.

I have moved all my small banans and 'Montbeliardii' under the covered courtyard for shelter, The E glaucum, will have to stay on its side until the wind dies down, as i have got fed up of standing it up. Maurelii being destroyed hour by hour

Same here, also wet, wet, wet!

 I feel for that banana of yours. It'll recover at least, imagine if that happened to the Y. rostrata

Got wet rescuing a fallen Amorphophallus unidentified, luckily it didn't snap as it would be a shame to lose it.

Wet,wet, wet, as well, well, well.... We've developed a stutter  You have rain  Very, very, very dull here, but dry.

Since I put the new rain guage up on 3rd August it has rained quite often, but not much in terms of mm. When I set the guage up and tested it the reading went up to 5.6mm. From that time (19 days) we have had 17.6mm. So dry, dry, dry, but wind, wind, wind

My rhubarb is now wrecked, as are the Paulownia. Highest gust has been 42.6 mph.

The snapped basjoo is a neighbour's round the corner. The gardens almost, but not quite, back onto each other.
Best regards

Definately not a good year for nanas :(
Most of mine are in terrible shape, except a few small ones that have taken shelter in the greenhouse.
I bought a Sabal Texana this year which I planted in what I thiught was quite a sheltered spot.
Its now looking like its going to be dug up,potted and kept somewhere else to recover.
Maybe Spain ar South of France
Most of my other Palms have been fine, even my large Trachycarpus hasn't been too trashed by this years Quirky summer, just the Sabal.Possibly the slowest growing plant I now own.

I have moved the Sabal posts as I feel it needs it's own topic to better discuss that subject. I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
