Today I went with my friend Alberto to find a newly publicised species, separated from Butia microspadix by Lorenzi and Noblick.
I found it..........

Blimey, that would be easy to miss.

Are these a new species or a newly discovered species Nigel?

It looks little more than a baby really. Do they get bigger like other Butia or are they dwarf palms?

This is a fully mature palm , cute little things. Its a new species because this population is different from Butia microspadix in that it doesnt have spathe on the tomentum, the flower differs and it grows bigger believe it or not.

Unreal! I didn't realise mature palms could be this small.

I can see how it has taken so long to name! I wonder how many different species still exist or have wiped out already. It's amazing how similar these look yet the size difference is huge.

One for the palm collector I feel. It looks like a £5 B&Q CIPD. Can't see a market for that tiddler I'm afraid.

Do you reckon there are still more species to find?

For sure there is more , the Butia I found here is a new species ( pic attached) , Lorenzi confirmed that but just didnt have time for it. The Butias in Paraguay are probably at least 3 species and its a pandoras box there yet currently all Butia paraguayensis. There is for sure others to find.
