Trachycarpus Martianus/Fortunei hybrid

Post by targui »

Photo. is of a Trachycarpus Martianus/Fortunei hybrid. I
Cross pollinated a female specimen I had at another
property with pollen from Trachycarpus Fortunei male
palm from a grove of Fortunei in my district. The result
is a very sturdy palm showing typical hybrid robustness,
and flowering profusely.

Second Photo. is of a Tabebuia Chrysantha tree just
coming into flower. They flower when they lose their leaves
for about six Weeks in the spring.. It has large trumpet
golden flowers and when fully out is a sight to behold.

glad you have joined in Nige,it sounded special when Alan mentioned it to me. is there any martianus cross of any kind anywhere? if not,Alan has real treasure icon_thumright also,
is there any specific reason given as to why this form might not cross or just never been done successfully before?

i achieved this cross about 10 years ago. The Martianus
was a good size then, so would be fully mature now. It was
the Khasia HIlls variety. I have not been back to that
property where at the time i was growing palms commercially.
I had a beautiful Ceroxylon Quindiuense growing there, it would
be 70 feet tall by now.

I agree, whatever it is I would be happy to have it in my back yard :D ,never mind the possible implications of a first recorded cross! Nige

Interesting stuff. It's certainly a great looking palm. Why would these 2 species be difficult to hybridise?

Do you have a name for it? Martunei or Fortianus?

If this is a cross it needs to be documented as I believe it
would be the first and only successful cross of it's kind right?????

As Nigel said, some more detailed pics..... of the trunk, flowers,
crown and leaves at least would really be great!

jim, there has been several claimed crosses but always doubt... and when its tried the cross gives nil reults, so if this one is from a martianus seed it can only be a hybrid because it looks so much like fortunei
Its a very interesting plant.
