Bamboo advice

Post by phatplants »

Will be planting out my three bamboos shortly, phy. Aurea, phy. Spectablis and phy. Aureosulcata aureocaulis. They are in pots at the moment, and was wondering whether they needed to be contained to prevent running. I remember somebody telling me that i could plant them in a large buried bucket/bin with the bottom cut out, and this would contain them? I'm sure this has been said before, but i would appreciate your advice. :D

Not sure about the other 2 but Aurea will definitely run.

Containment methods vary but a large bin or similar with the base cut off has been recommended on here in the past.

I'll be planting out a couple of my Aurea this year but I think I'll use a root barrier like this:

It's expensive stuff but I'd rather be certain that it's not going to start shooting up all over the place.

Hi

All phyllostachys bamboo will run eventually, as they are not clumping bamboo.

As a general rule bamboos which don't need barriers are fargesia, borinda, chusquea and thamnocalamus. Practically everything else will run.

Mine are all being planted out this year. I only have 2 varieties, P. Nigra and Aurea but they're quite tall now and i have about 8 or so good sized clumps. Mine will be going in bottomless plastic bins

Arlon, didn't you have a pic of a perfectly round Aurea that looked like it was root barriered?

Thanks for all your advice icon_thumleft how deep should a bucket/bin be planted? Does the rim need to be above ground to prevent any jumping over?

I've grown all mine on in pots. The 2 Aurea i have, i bought (or stole  ) from B&Q last winter, £70 worth for a tenner. The nigra i had from Cathy (Bristol) and split it into smaller clumps which again have done well.

A thought just occurred to me, I reckon this stuff would work just as well as that expensive root barrier stuff:

or even this one doubled up:

I have about 15 large bamboos of different variaties & as an experiment they are all planted differently, some straight into ground, some in massive pots with bottoms cut out, & some i've dug deep holes and lined the sides with synthetic roof slates but left bottom open, i've also got some large fargesia murrelli jumbo in 50 litre pots. I was acctually wondering whether bamboo generally suffer from root disturbance if took out the ground & location moved. karl.

I wouldn't have thought so Karl, bambbos can be divided by slicing through the roots with no ill effect.
