Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
Looks cream krackered but might be worth checking out if the roots have rotted as well, if not i would cut down close down to the base and stick it on a heat mat and wait and see.

Keep it warm and fairly dry after cutting it back as it may pup. These do took a while to appear, so be patient. If nothing's appeared by mid-summer, it's an ex-sikki.
Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
i could bring it inside, in south facing front bedroom
Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
Mine looked similar,
It was soft so its been dumped. I am not prepared to mess about with ifs, buts, and maybes...cheap enough to buy new and store it better this winter.
Lesson learnt.

Actually Cordy Im quite positive about that plant. While there isnt any green you can see that the growing point has structure and isnt just a gooey mess.
Id take it out of the soil, wash as much muck off as I could, cut out whats left and give it some H2O2 to kill the infection. Then back in some fresh light potting mix and give as much sun and heat as you can deliver.
At least thats what Id do...good luck and let us know if it survives.

cheap enough to buy kata, but you lose the all important year before of growth.kata wrote:Mine looked similar,

A year of planted out growth, where it got to 7 foot, would have give me a monster this year. To start again with a small plant is taking a step back.
Similar to Ensetes each year you get one through your rewarded
Thanks for advice all i'm going to cut it down lower again and investigate and bring inside somewhere even warmer, and repot too

Feel the corm at the bottom if it feels solid it will come through,if its feeling soft, not a good sign.
Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
Thats how mine was mush...soft, feeling the stem that soft it was never going to survive,
As always, good luck Cordy I had a decision to make.

repotted tonight, some white root in the pot, and firm corm, firmer towards the base, ended up chopping majority of the old stem off. Brought inside, not watered yet as original soil was pretty damp. South facing front bedroom, full sun.

The black centres are a bad sign. Give it a go but I would be sowing some more seeds now.
Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
How sad. I did the same to my Sikki. Not very hardy it seems.
Re: First winter casualty, I think the Sikki may be dead?
if its dead i won't grow it again. wasn't even a cold winter. probably expand my ensete collection, easy to get through and gives me the red colour k crave in a banana
