Very Strange Tetrapanax Rex, what is going on!?

Bought this one last month online, I was expecting a tiny plant but I got this one. It was like a bare root tree when I recieved it. Is this dying or what is going on? I have another one from a different website which has no trunk but is normal btw.

It looks like some kind of strange buds have appeared on the turnk below the growing point, does anyone know what is happening to it? I'm guessing it's a dud.

I noticed after It got to me, on the website it changed from "in stock" and was listed as as "Out of stock".
I guess this was the last crappy one.

Those are new leaves! They do look odd at first! It has spent time putting out new roots then budding up.
