Love Unusual Plants - But is this a step too far?

I've been gathering a few varieties of Farfugium this year and came across this curiosity.

Farfugium japonicum 'Ryuto'

Leaves are described as being like melted plastic. I'm a big fan of unusual plants, but I'm not sure about this one. What are the opinions out there?

That image is not the nicest. What does the whole plant look like?

Well it doesn't look 'nice' but I find it interesting in that no one in your street will have it. If you plant it in your front garden, it will really make you stand out.

Edit: Some varieties other than the Ryuto look unusual AND nice at the same time. Check this page: http://www.alternativeeden.com/2011/08/ ... ction.html

I'm not sure Kris. This is the only image I've found. Constantine Garden Nursery are supposedly selling it, but their site appears to be down this morning.

EDIT - Now they're up and running

icon_thumright Agreed. It was this article that triggered my searches into harder-to-find Farfugiums.

It's in the Cotswold Garden Flowers catalogue (the paper version) so they probably have plants for sale even if they aren't on the website. Not on my wishlist though

Jeez thats one bad chest infection, phlegm :(

I have never understood the appeal of hideous plants, just cos no one else has one  , probably because they have good taste, what pleasure can you get from looking at an ugly plant? :?
