Expanded clay granules
Expanded clay granules
I've been given a large amount of these. Has anyone used them successfully in any specialised potting mixes for a particular exotic?
Re: Expanded clay granules
Hi Greville, I've used them in bonsai compost some years ago. They worked, but I can't remember in what percentage. Sorry.
Re: Expanded clay granules
as far as I know, they are used on top of the potting soil to deter blackfly etc ?
Re: Expanded clay granules
I've used them years ago, good in the short term, but long term in a hard water area they just clog up with calcium eventually.
Re: Expanded clay granules
In the past I have used them as drainage in the bottom of pots and as a decorative mulch on top in pots, problem is the bloody things float over the edge when plants are watered
Re: Expanded clay granules
MY use has been confined to top dressings and raising pots in drip trays.
I'm sure they must help in potting mixes, too. I feel impelled to try various pups of nanas and aroids and make some comparisons. My Colocasia pink china has produced lots of young plants to test out various combinations.

Re: Expanded clay granules
A couple of Palm books I've got suggest using Clay Pellets as part of the mixes for various palms. Some Brahea armata that I bought already had it in their mix.
Re: Expanded clay granules
I grow agaves and other stuff in pure gravel, have thought of using expanded clay but never had any to play with.
Heard a story about using Tescos Lightweight cat litter, which is non clumping, mini expanded clay to grow cacti in..
somethng I will experiment with 'cos we use that brand.
