Brittany exotics!!
Brittany exotics!!
Just spent a week in northern Brittany. It wasn't intended to be an hardy tropicals expedition but when there are mature palms and musas growing everywhere, and echiums sprouting like weeds, photos were taken!!
The food is damn good too!!!
Climate is similar to Cornwall, perhaps a tad warmer and a little sunnier (could not be cloudier!!)
We visited the towns of Lannion and Morlaix where there were many mature Trachycarpus and Phoenix canariensis_CIDP dotted around, the usual Cordylines and some Musas also seen. Spotted a few Butias. All the palms were in much better shape than the usual yellow and spotty palms often seen in the UK (thanks to our lovely rains and grey skies). The musas were large, many flowered and fruited. Echiums were big, again most had flowered.
Ile De Batz was a pleasant afternoon, a remote island just off Roscoff where they have an exotic garden full of rare exotics, some even from Ethopia and Nigeria which was a big surprise given the similar climate to Cornwall.
While waiting for the ferry home we visited the exotic gardens near Roscoff, again a pleasant surprise. All gardens were just 5 euros to visit and well worth the trek. Unfortunately the day in Roscoff was spoiled by rain and the last few pics show this in their dull colours.

Indeed we did. They went on strike a week before our sailing from Plymouth was due.Nathan wrote:Very nice

We had to change our plans and drive up to Poole which on a Friday afternoon was a nightmare drive from here. We sailed on Condor and had a long drive from Cherbourg. Fortunately Brittany Ferries got their problems sorted during the week and our return sailing from Roscoff to Plymouth was a go.
We did consider going with LD Lines from Portsmouth, but on a Friday I didn't really fancy the long drive.

Re: Brittany exotics!!
wow it's stunning! I wouldn't have thought of Brittany and tropicals together. Love 'the rock' (bet it has great views). Love the picture Ile de Batz 'Jungle!
Re: Brittany exotics!!
Fantastic pic's!!, i have realitives living in mellionec, central btittany & the exotics are awesome in & around the village . It does have a strange climate though, with a very dry feel in the air, when it does rain you certainly no about it!. karl.
Re: Brittany exotics!!
Yes unfortunately Condor are temporarily in Poole until the quay in Weymouth is repaired, so a bit further for you to drive... Condor sail from Portsmouth too on a larger ferry, they only go to France on a weekly basis during the summer but run a twice daily service to the Channel Islands from here...maritimesbob wrote:Indeed we did. The Brittany Ferries strike caused chaos in Portsmouth & you would have been very lucky to get on an LD Lines ferry, most people were diverted to Dover, which is a very long drive!

Re: Brittany exotics!!
Brittany sounds like a great place for exotics , milder than cornwall, a bit sunnier and warmer and probably a little bit more light in the winter. Better than the North East of England anyway. I would imagine the West coast of France is a great place for exotics.
