I'll log the progress here, hoping I'll find some pink stemmed, rex leaved beauty hidden in this stock If not i'll be happy to see how big the standard Eddoes get as a trial run before investing in the specialist nursery stock.
Few breaths into zip bags and put on top of my boiler, will it too hot for them?

They look healthy enough, Cordy
Re: My first attempt with Colocasia's, "Nampi Costa Rica Edd
No they will be fine I would think. They like the heat I keep being told that heat is the key with getting these going!cordyman wrote:will it too hot for them?
Hope you get a monster of a plant from them.
Regards
Steve

cordy you inspired me to go out on the hunt and after a small search I found some fresh ones that have a china label on them not sure if that is there original place of growth or not. there in the prop hopeing for the best
not the largest ones in the world but they were kind of expencive compared to mammoth and some others I have gotten recently. I think somthing like £3.30 each

I put mine in the cupboard with the boiler and 1 sprouted after about a week, the rest are only fit for the bin, I'm guessing it was too warm as 3 look like shrivled up prunes lol. 2 have gone mouldy beyond saving.
1 out of 6 not the best results. I tried canna in the same spot last year and failed miserably.
I need to find a better spot.

Did you sterilise them first?Delboy wrote:the rest are only fit for the bin, I'm guessing it was too warm as 3 look like shrivled up prunes lol. 2 have gone mouldy beyond saving.
The ones I bought last year (from Asian supermarket) I left hanging around for a week before I did anything with them (I thought they would store indefinitely). I did sterilise them, but they were already mouldy before I treated them ...
I think if you can find them really fresh, sterilise them, and not hang about at all, that that might help.
The Asian supermarket I bought from probably has a high rate of turnover, but they only do deliveries once a week, so may have been best part of a week old when I got them
Re: My first attempt with Colocasia's, "Nampi Costa Rica Edd
mine after 3-4 days on top of the boiler have a little fluffy bit of white mould growing, very slight, and there is some red swelling on one of them, all in seperate bags too, wonder do I need to add an antifungal
Re: My first attempt with Colocasia's, "Nampi Costa Rica Edd
There was a thread last spring, I may be misremembering but I seem to recollect someone, Dave?, re-sterilising them with Hydrogen Peroxide when some mould developed during incubation
Re: My first attempt with Colocasia's, "Nampi Costa Rica Edd
With mine i just used zip bags. I did blow in the bag Yorkshire Kris style.
Like i said one sprouted quickly, i was chuffed but then it all went downhill. The one that sprouted was potted up and has done butter all since, but it is just sat on a shelf in the kitchen.
I ordered mine online from a asian shop, so not sure how fresh they were but looked ok.
Next year i will sterilise first i think, not sure where i will put them tho.

I bought 2 today from Morrisons, £1.99 per Kilo. I bought 2 which came to 88p.
Im going to try the boiler method, I tried this 3 years ago with bulbs from India but they took ages to sprout and with another bad summer they didn't do well. BUT, we are going to have an amazing summer 2013 im sure these 2 will grow as tall as me

The morrisons i was in today is quite a way from me Delboy, I was shopping nearby and popped in for some salad (it is spring after all) I have never saw them in my local Morrisons..Delboy wrote:Your lucky Deedee, one day a few weeks ago i drove to 2 tesco stores, a morrisons, sainsbury's and Asda and not one single eddoe.

oooooooooooh they look good Dee! One round and oblong style, be great to see if they differ!
I may try two of mine in the boil-in-bag DaveB method, but not sure if this is good for germination or simply reviving an existing plant which has gone dormant
