Dead Cyathea Medullaris

Dead Cyathea Medullaris

Post by fern Rob »

Today I checked on some of my tree ferns, so far I have binned three due to this winter. Today I noticed that one of my 1ft trunked Medullaris has died so I pulled all the dead croziers out of the crown to see that the central core had started to rot.
What a waste of a tree fern.

Looking at how the cyathea is put together it looks like if you have one crozier that rots back to far it moves in to the growing point. I really wish that the Cyathea had not died, but it has provided some education, looking at the growing point it seems that the cyathea crown has little bulges that grow, that are connected to the core and then form a new crozier. The rot has attacked half of the crown and it will not come back from that :( .

I hadn't had mine that long, perhaps i bought a bad 'un to start with. I still have it in the hope it'll come good . Its all still fairly hard in the crown and no soft rot, so will give it more time yet.

how do you protect them Rob?

Are you sure it can't recover, or is that pic a 100% death?

The crown has now gone, I bring them inside in the winter.
Keep them above freezing.

Sorry to hear that Rob. My medullaris has been very slow in comparison to my brownii, I'm not sure I have the potting mix right, but at least it still seems to be growing.

I lost a Medullaris last year, blamed myself for leaving it outside too long.
I haven't replaced it but have acquired others, but had them all inside all winter and kept them green, so I am confident they will survive.
Best to pick up such delicacies in sales, it hurts less if you trash them.
You have my sympathy.

I lost two tree ferns in 2010 but couldn't throw them away so I carved out the crown and planted a shuttlecock fern inside lol

Such a shame to hear and see. Was this from when they defoliated when they dried out some months back?

At the moment mine is still green but only in the polyhouse. It needs to come outside asap but no chance yet.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

This Medullaris looked ok but, just died, the one that dried out seems to be sorting its self out.
