One for Fern Rob

Post by phatplants »

Friend of mine just visited Crews Hill and sent me a couple of photos from Hillside Nurseries, formally Ausferns (I think!). First pic Cyathea Medullaris £200
Second one Cyathea Cunninghamii £250.
Both had burnt fronds, but new growth seemed ok.

Great, would be worth asking whether they'd knock £50 off in it's current condition.

Not sure if they do, maybe one of the local guys might be able to collect it for you?

I think I will use a delivery company or interparcel if I get it.

The medularis is WAY overpriced. I got mine in the half price sale from Simon last year and its trunk looks a similar size. Mine was less than £20!!
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

Not sure on the trunk size on that Tom as photos can be deceiving. Just know from my friend that it is a big fern. How big was the one you got?

That Medullaris could be a 1ft trunk.

Looks to be a 1 foot ish trunk. Mine was 10" or so, same sized fronds and like I said, it was less than £20 in the sale. Plus it was when Simon did the free delivery as well last year.

Not a fern expert at all, but Is the Cunninghamii well priced? Looks around 3 foot plus trunk.

The Cunninghamii is about right as they are rare in cultivation and the wild.

Did they have any other types of tree fern?

You'd like a trip round Crews Hill and the Gardeners Club, there were loads of tree ferns there, predominantly big Dicksonia antarctica but a selection of C.Brownii & C.Cooperii.
You'd be well wise to wait till Simon does his 50% discount, 'cos he's getting lots of ferns in, stuff to die for......
Its making me want to spend...........
