First spear pull, chamaerops humilis, only bought in April!
First spear pull, chamaerops humilis, only bought in April!
Never had a palm spear pull yet, so this will be my first, it was only bought in April, so its been through a really hard summer of great temps and dryness
Pup looks mighty green, probably as the plant is sending all its energy here now...
The chasm of doom...
upper spears were already a brownish colour, they came out first, then the newer greener spears came away like they were rooted in butter
it was healthy as sin and even flowered this summer

bought here for £25

I'm going to dig it up and go to Homebase

Cordy, I believe this could have been self inflicted with your fanatical watering!!, chamerop's always prefer to be on the dry side unlike Trachycarpus's. karl.

Re: First spear pull, chamaerops humilis, only bought in Apr
Shouldn't the spear re grow?
Re: First spear pull, chamaerops humilis, only bought in Apr
the whole centre has come out, so a huge hole, I guess it could but not a great time with the perils of winter around the corner
Re: First spear pull, chamaerops humilis, only bought in Apr
Pour some diluted peroxide in the hole to destroy bacteria, keep dry and keep fingers crossed.

One of mine did that just before winter and is now growing fine. It started to regrow the following summer.

Fair play to homebase 5 year plant guarantee, didn't even have a receipt
The return reason is hilarious

the £25 hombase voucher wasn't much use in the plant section, so i'll probably spend it on paint!
This took my fancy until I seen the 7*c statement on the back
I'm not sure I want another chammy, hmmmmmmmm perhaps a Trithrinax campestris,

If you really want a dipladenia/mandivilla, wait for next spring when Lidl have them for under 2 quid each. They're fast growing and it's rubbish about keeping them above 7c....they'll easily take 5c!
Regards that chammy, if you don't tug at the spears, they don't pull out
