Had my Spider in a shelter postition at the base of a bamboo clump for about 3 years, and its only grown to about 2ft, which is ideal.

From my experience of Fatsia varieties:

Fatsia Moseri - medium to fast growth, very large leaves.
Fatsia bog standard - medium growth at first then accelerates with time, medium leaves.
Annelise - medium grower, smallish to medium leaf size.
Polycarpa - small leaves, slow growth.
Variegata - medium to largish leaves, medium growth.
Spiders web - slow growth, small leaves.

Vine weevil grubs seem to really like Annelise roots

In my experience the soil is very dry around bamboo. This could account for slow growth. Also highly variegated plants will always be slower than their fully green counterparts.

I've planted one Annelise a year ago, and it as not grown much, but it was small when I planted it

I have planted 2 spiders web in 2 different gardens ....

the 1st one was planted a year and a half ago, it was small (in a 9cm pot) and has started growing, but at one stage, some of the new leaves were stunted/deformed ... it looks ok now, with good colouring

the 2nd spiders web was larger and was planted approx 8 months ago .... it as formed 3 new leaves

both are planted in semi-shade

from what I have read, spiders web can grow to 6 foot or taller ... perhaps they are like palms ... sulk for the 1st year, and after the 3rd year they grow fast?

i'd have to totally disagree about polycarpa, it is easily the most vigourous of the lot
