You remind me of Nicole Appleton on Celebrity Jungle.... "OMG, I just touched a tree "cordyman wrote:I remember reading on here they are toxic, and a carcinogenic?
Removed today with long handled loppers and straight into recycling bin, just in case. Does my above pic have any spores on, it was the darkest undersided frond I removed.
Best not going in a garden with Cycas revoluta or Brugmansia, or Foxgloves, or......
Best regards
Dave

If you go around snorting the undersides of the leaves everyday, you could get a problem.greyhound wrote:

When I cut the fronds I bash them about to ensure any spores have been released onto damp soil then shred the fronds as a mulch to put around the base of the Dicksonia antarctica

Im getting some strange looks from my neighbours over the fence as I tend to my ferns in my orange biological weapons suit
Re: Dicksonia antarctica fronds toxicity, how do you handle?
Safe, as long as you don't eat the plant, or snort the spores.

I had a cycas, currently have brugs and foxgloves, but none of those give off airborne carcinogens?
also none of those i'd ever take so much greenery off and lop smaller to put in recycle bin.
That makes Dicksonia antarctica pretty unique in that sense, even more so when most people leave the fronds on till later in the year, when they do bare spores, then start removing/handling, and if there are as many spores as i'm led to believe I reckon they'd be very easy to inhale.
Not a major worry but certainly something to be aware of

I read somewhere that you can eat tree fern croziers.
Re: Dicksonia antarctica fronds toxicity, how do you handle?
I realised far too late last winter as I had been inhaling spores for weeks in my poly house. Once I did realise I just sprayed yhe fronds first to stop the spores going air Bourne. I dont think id want to eat them.

We'll have to see if all the Botanical gardens rip them out, as many are in huge greenhouses where public visit. If they are as dangerous as you believe, they will all disappear.cordyman wrote: I had a cycas, currently have brugs and foxgloves, but none of those give off airborne carcinogens?
