Chamaedorea Radicalis
Anyone growing Chamaedorea Radicalis? looks a nice Palm for filling a few gaps. Reminds me of a house plant.

Yes, I grow several and would even like some more. I know several others on her grow them too. They've done really well in my, albeit fairly mild, location. The odd frond has browned in the coldest snaps and I've been known to chuck a fleece over them but don't think I really needed too. Each summer they've pushed out a few new fronds though will never be a fast grower. They fruit each year too but it tends to be early autumn so haven't got any ripe seeds yet.
As you say, they are a good filler. Nice, tropical look but much smaller in height. I have heard they grow taller planted in clumps as they almost use each other for support.

Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
Not hardy here' I brought one from Akamba in 2009, and it died at circa -4C. Won't be trying again.
Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
I had several planted out, the largest was over 1mtr tall and was undamaged by cold for over 15yrs until the winter of 2011 when both succumbed, very dissapointing!
Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
I have some planted out here in Switzerland. They took -5/-6 this winter so far without damage.

Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
If you mean March 2013, that would be like planting in January in a normal year, and it depends if hardened off, or if they have been molly coddled in a propagator.Mr List wrote:not here, I killed two by planting in march

Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
well I know but the way you said even seedlings take minus whatever gives a false impression of how hardy they are

Re: Chamaedorea Radicalis
Think it shows how hardy they are when left cold to grow at their own pace, rather than forced to get a bigger plant quicklyMr List wrote:well I know but the way you said even seedlings take minus whatever gives a false impression of how hardy they are

I'm trying Chamaedorea Microspadix from seed, supposed to be reasonably hardy. I sowed them a couple of days ago.
