Save the Ensete

Post by Neil Ziemski »

Evening all
I went for a greenhouse check, all is well apart from- I think my Ensete Maurelli are a bit too moist- they look like rot could set in.
Having got them to nearly Feb I am desperate to keep them alive.
I have 7 in 2/3 litre pots, any thoughts on a remedy, I brought two into the house to see if it makes a difference.
It's my first time I have tried to overwinter these.
I got them very cheap so it's not the end of the world but suggestions most welcome.
Regards
Neil

I think you have done the right thing bringing them in the house where its warmer etc.....Are they planted up or did you store them "dry".

Ah...never read properly...potted.

They need gentle bottom heat to get them growing again.....

Mine is in the pot shape...not the pot, just the shape, least disturbance.

I still drained it.

If your green house is heated take them out the pots and stand them on piles of newspaper to suck the moisture out of the soil once the soil looks like it has dried nicely put back in the pots.

Its easy to see when its dry, the paper.

I had it dripping where it is now, on a table with overhead roof. I then took it to paper to dry the table, I did the paper for a few days.

I'm going to check all is well tomorrow... :ahhh!: suspense is killing me but I will only take a pic then wrap it again in seconds.

I also want to make sure its dry.

Hi
Thankyou for the replies.
They are potted but very dry, so dry they lift out of the pot.
The roots are fine the stem is showing signs of looking like its over moist.
Shall I put in a heated house room with a radiator, water lightly and get them growing again.

Not too close to the radiator neil, plants and radiators don't make the best of friends.

In my experience from last winter once this takes hold you cant save them but give the suggestions a try and hopefully you can save them. I'm hoping mine in the loft will be ok.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.

The only way you'll know you've saved then is new roller and roots....however you try to save them.
