Much of this excellent debate has centred on keeping permanently planted palms with varying degrees of hardiness in any one location for as long as possible. If that is the benchmark to measure the plants' prosperity, then for the many reasons given, the South Coast/London locations cannot be disputed.
However, exotics are so diverse that just about everyone in the UK can be successful with big leaves or cactus when they push the boundaries/bend the rules with the help of greenhouses/protection and especially the inspiration/daring of HTUK members from opposite ends of the country when they share their experiences...... and, in this case, debate it.
Living in the favoured zone, with a sunny microclimate to die for, I'm prepared to try just about anything.....In fact, I regard it as my duty (cover-up speak for being a greedy old git )
