Feeding Bananas

Hi, I've been looking for a good liquid feed for my Bananas and it keeps popping up that feed for Azalea, Camellia and Rhododendron is suitable. Does anyone use this or can you recommend a good feed? Thanks

Re: Feeding Bananas
If you are growing Basjoo I'd be inclined to say water is very important. Top dress with some compost in spring and some fish/blood/bone or other general fertiliser. They are pretty hard to kill, so just sit back and enjoy!

Bananas prefer slightly acidic conditions so that's probably why ericacious feed keeps popping up.
Re: Feeding Bananas
biobizz fish mix (use as a foliar feed-4ml to 1 litre of water)
biobizz alg-a-mic (algae and seaweed extract)... use as a foliar feed (4ml to a litre of water)
advanced nutrients iguana juice grow (4ml to a litre of water, and use as a soil drench)
all available on the internet
and even better, make actively aerated compost tea (using a brewer, worm humis, rainwater and unstrapped unsulpered molasses)

Re: Feeding Bananas
The two more important nutrients for bananas are nitrogen and potasium. You can buy potassium nitrate NPK 13-0-46 at a store of chemicals. It's a very cheap and very used feeding for agriculture. It's pH is neutral.
When the musa is ready to flower you can change to potassium sulfate NPK 0-0-50.
And when the plant starts after winter you can help adding aminoacids.

I did wonder....OOPS! Not sure where my Aquilegia came from?
Re: Feeding Bananas
Today I scattered chicken poo pellets over our Basjoo bed, as I do each year and will repeat several times during the growing season. With a bunch of stems still around 5ft or taller I am really hoping for a great season if the mild weather continues. I do not protect the stems (they grow too close to a tall Trachycarpus which probably provides shelter) as if we have a harsh winter they just re-grow from the rootstock. I try to mulch in autumn if I remember.
Re: Feeding Bananas
This weekend I must dig in plenty of manure like Cathy
You can't go wrong with feeding Musa Basjoo ..... but beware !!!!!
It reminded me that with copious feed (unmeasured Nitrates per manure) , ensure plenty of water or you'll get the problem I had a while back ...please check the thread on the link http://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/forum/v ... f=1&t=8813
Don't panic, you will really have to over do it

Re: Feeding Bananas
I didn't cover all of my Basjoo stems and have the battered leaves to prove it.
The ones I did cover are shooting so need uncovering to 'green up'
Given the forecast they are all 'cleared to takeoff to the sky'
