evergreens for pots

Post by Mr List »

just got rid of a couple of dwarf conifers I had in pots and I want something evergreen for winter interest to plant in the empty pots.

it will be with lots of hostas in the growing season so tall and thin would be best.

Pseudopanax ferox or crassifolius would be interesting or some colourful Cordylines?

How about some small trachycarpus or chamaerops? Not the most exciting of answers I know, but both would be suitable although maybe not thin enough for you?

I am wanting something to live in these same pots indefinitely so anything that would need repotting into bigger pots is a no no.

with shrubs and stuff you can trim the top growth and the roots to repot, that doesn't really work with palms and cordies.

also something which is 100% hardy in pots. this is simple no hassle plants I am after for these two pots.

are there any evergreen perennials that get to a nice big size?
what about a type of grass that has a very different look to bamboo?
do smoke bushes do ok in shady places and in pots?

My small smoke bush was in heavy shade and grew ok but its not evergreen so will be a pot of twigs in winter.
How about a standard mahonia or red robin?

I get the impression you always looks for plants that do not exist. My suggestion- plastic plants or just send a letter to Monsanto with a few million dollars included and they will make you the plants that meet your requirements.

I was always told that Euphorbia much prefer being in the ground to being in pots.

I have two Cortaderia Richardii in two pots.
Everyone remarks that it unusual but they all like them.
Can survive the occasional drying out if you forget to water them.

If it's shade then what about a tall thin Yew (i.e. Taxus baccata fastigiata)? You will get a good few years out of a plant like this!
