im in the process of laying new decking and I'm undecided on what to use decking oil or stain ? icon_scratch
Do you guys and gals out there have any preference and why ?

If you like the colour it is oil it, although it will go slightly darker. If you don't like the colour stain it. Personally I prefer to oil it. icon_thumright

Yacht varnish for long term protection and look. Oils and stains don’t work well if you are putting down softwood decking, which most people in the U.K. use and neither protect well.

I agree with the above comments. Stain involves more work long term as it needs sanding down more thoroughly and its a pain if they discontinue your colour unless you have one of the stains that s more like a paint (solid pigment you can see through).

As Blairs states yacht varnish is dam good stuff...... On a Yacht but do you really want a shiny deck round the garden? icon_thumright

Yacht varnish comes in Matt/satin. Super shiny decking will look a tad shitty.
