There is a similar thread like this on the banana site as regards to Ae Ae === i- i or eye- eye the hawaiians pronounce it Ah e- Ah e

BAS JOO or Bas oo or Bas jew.

Clem-a-tis or clemutus

I have a very good book by Robert Lee Riffle called thr tropical look. And he gives the correct way of saying the name of the plant.

I think turtile is probably correct, although we nearly all pronounce it differently. If your lotto number come up you will win a FORTUNE not a FORTUN-EE

So fortunei is FORTUNE-EYE, but as I said everyone I know pronounces it FORTUN-EE-EYE. We may be getting confused with things that end in 'ii' Phoenix roebelenii ROE-BEL-EEN-EE-EYE.
Of course I may be talking a load of Bull
Best regards
Dave

I'm never saying any names outloud again.

Anyhow, when we all talk at the meets, most of the time we all know what the others mean, even if they say it differently ?

You have to spell things right before you can pronounce them right. The most common spelling I have seen, which I believe to be correct is fontunei which would be FORTUNE-EYE but if people spell it fortuneii as grub did, they will pronounce it FORTUN-EE-EYE.

FEE-O-NIX like the bird.

I say BA-ZHOO with a silent S and a soft J.

It's even more of a problem to write fernetically (sp?)

KAM-ER-OPS or SHAM-ER-OPS?

Don, being a 'ampshire hog, its got to be mani carrrta.
Ive always called my Juania australis, jew-ann-ia but its proper pronunciation is hwania.
Bit that gets me, if they want it called hwania then why dont they spell it like that
Chamearops is said with a K, Kamearops.
