Cafe eats customers!
Cafe eats customers!
Power went off today while they change the posts or something. Went to Eden!
(Beta vulgaris ) Cola nitida - yes, Cola as in Cola! Cycas revoluta - pity to see the large plants destroyed by the cold, but I suppose it has to be tried from time to time. ...and I think this is Elegia capensis, which explains why I have very little time for Restios. I don't really like Pampas grass, and I don't see what this adds except troublesome to cultivate?
This Tiger had a good day - nobody left!
Alocasia - not labelled of course, this is Eden, just don't eat the apples!
Aloe ferox in the temperate biome (cold tent).
Alpinia zerumbet in the tropical biome (hot tent).
Amorphophallus konjac not open yet, but I think this is the first time I have seen it flower.
Banksia integrifolia - I have never been to Eden without this being in flower!
It is a great plant. Can't be bothered with it myself, but a great plant.(Beta vulgaris ) Cola nitida - yes, Cola as in Cola! Re: Cafe eats customers!
Elettaria cardamomum, another plant I don't recall seeing in flower before. (Cardamon).
Globba whifaldii which I had never heard of before.
Anybody take a stab at a name for this Heliconia? Really good leaves.
Licuala grandis. Much of the tropical biome was looking really good - many of the palms are starting to mature.
I'm guessing that most of us have Musa basjoo looking like this at the moment (but possibly not this many).
Musa textilis textilis just to show a good looking banana!
and I think this is Philodendron friedrichsthalii, or at least that is what I used to call it (update welcome).
Protea subvestita one of the labelled ones.
Ravenala madagascariensis. Really good last year, but going past its best now, though I like the trunk.
and Rothmannia annae for some scented flowers to end on.
Re: Cafe eats customers!
WOW great pics, John. Its a heck of a long way for me, but I must make the trip one day...

Fantastic pics, John. Thanks for sharing them.
The Banksia and Protea blooms are great, but I share your misgivings about the Restios, I don't really get the fascination with them either.

Wow great photo's John, for some reason its 10 years since we last visited Cornwall so have never been to Eden Hopefully if we can make the May meet up we can put that to rights
Have to say I am in the same boat as you and Pete as far as restio's go, Nat brought a couple from a nursery at a meet a few years back that were planted out, not sure what happened to them but they are not among all the plants I dug up recently

Re: Cafe eats customers!
Great pics John, and that Cycad just shows how cold it got down there.
I have not been to Cornwall since 1982 when my father had a holiday bungalow at Praa Sands. It was a 10 hour journey then, my guess is it will be far worse now. I will have to visit some time, particularly as my father is planning to move down there this year, house sale permitting.
I have been told avoid July to September, as Cornwall roughly translates to Gridlock with only one main route in and out

Wow John, fantastic pics, as ever .
As others have said, I must get to Eden one day, it looks fabulous, I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing said about it.
As others have also said, I've never "got" Restios either, I just never wanted to say anything! All the closeted Restio haters - out yourselves!

John, Excellent pictures. I am goint to take a stab at the Heliconia being Schiedeana as its a spiral one going by the flowers and also the colour too.
Love the look of the Globba and Elletaria flowers.

They look great in a large garden like Melissa and Keiths, but in a normal plot they just don't do it for me sorry
Fantastic pics btw John.Haven't been back to eden for a couple of years now.Something I hope to rectify this summer
Only if you get stuck behind a tractorIt was a 10 hour journey then, my guess is it will be far worse now.
Otherwise 4 1/2 hours'll get you to Newquay easily, maybe quicker now the roadworks on the A30s finished(unless they've started up again )
Re: Cafe eats customers!
Thanks for those pics John brings back a few memories of that place. Any misgivings you might have about Restios would be allayed if you saw the ones in Melissa's garden.
The ones that look like giant Mares tail--equi summat?

Re: Cafe eats customers!
I quite like Restios- ive killed loads of them in the past- but the 3 ive got at the moment in pots seem to be doing quite well (ie they are still alive!).
And the other half likes em so in the spirit of encouraging this behaviour we have 3 big pots of them in the garden!

Some great pics John - nice to see a few flowers early in the season, even if they are in a rainforest environment! I'm assuming that Cycad was one of the ones outdoors?
