Hello again Dave, I can thoroughly recommend Butia Capitata...

I do love the Butia Capitata where can you get reasonable sizes from and how much mate .dave
Re: can people give me any names of hardy palms
If you leave it until spring you'll find these are becoming more readily available at good nurseries, perhaps locally to you even, otherwise search the specialist exotic on-line places often mentioned on here and other boards you frequent.
It's probably best to go for a reasonably good sized one, say 5ft. or so perhaps if its going in the ground, though they are good in pots when smaller.
Probably one that size would 'catch up' to a very large and expensive specimum in any case, as with many plants.

They sell fairly large Chamaerops humilis at Gordale, but you know what their prices are like, maybe over £60 for 2 feet high specimen.
In fact they stock palms over the winter in Gordale so they're usually in plentiful supply even in January

Re: can people give me any names of hardy palms
its not the same plant, but they are both the same type of palm both being fan palms and although not identical they do look similar. trachys get loads bigger though and chammies will branch and turn into more like a bushy shrubby palm.
i dont think trachys have spikes on the leaves either

Hi David, Chamaerops is a fan palm like a Trachycarpus but the two are quite different in character particularly when older.
Chammy is the name of my Chamaerops humils which is about 25 years old Has silvery backed leaves so could be an argentea but was not sold as that. This is a view of one side of the garden From Left to Right
Danny - Dicksonia antarctica
Simon - Musa Siam Ruby (bottom)
Bertie - Butia capitata
Paolo - Paulownia tormentosa (largerounded leaves)
Pele - Tall Cordyline purpurea
Charlie - Chamaerops humilis (more feathery form)
Trunky - Tall stripped Trachycarpus fortunei
Patsy - Fatsia japonica variegata
Lotty - Chamaedorea radicalis (hardy parlour palm) good in shade but can take some sun. These palms were grown from seed produced on the clump in the back garden

Re: can people give me any names of hardy palms
I'm sure I can give you some seeds/cuttings from my collection of plants as well if you wish! I have a fair few home grown Bottlebrush seedlings from the mother plant if you want one/some, they're not palms but they'll help build your garden up with some nice plants
