 Re: Seriously expensive palms
Wow!
Looks like 10,000 Euros per metre of trunk.
Could you imagine the heartache if they did not transplant or were lost in a freak winter?

 Re: Seriously expensive palms
Well just ordered 2 Arenga micrantha 12.50Euros each.Mind you I take little notice of theer assertion of it being hardy to -6c to -7c,take that with a skipload of salt. They'll spend the warmer months outside, but overwinter in one of my greenhouses which are kept frost free. I will report back on the quality. metalhammer.

The Palm Centre made the same claim about 10 years ago. Having grown it alongside engleri, I'm sceptical. Both incur more or less the same amount of winter damage during winters that are cold enough. Micrantha is a larger plant and does grow marginally faster, but it is still slow. Putting that aside, it is a handsome thing when clad in undamaged leaves and I do think it is a better palm compared to engleri.

 Re: Seriously expensive palms
Particularly after the last winter! It would be great to hear that everything is okay and he has not suffered too many losses.

I've got 5 (3 year old plants) and they hardly grow , even inside. With heat or cold! - In fact they seem to attract every bug you can throw at them. Paul.

 Re: Seriously expensive palms
As for hardiness you shouldn't compare palms grown in the UK with those in Germany. Summers here are really really hot so plants get more strenght to survive winters. Quality of plants from German sellers is always TOP. I'm gonna buy summink from DerPalmenmann and will share my opinion. Today I got another Siam Ruby of ebay (since the first I got doesn't want to turn red) and the plant already has red markings. And 6 € ain't much for this variety. Searched thru many German websites with tropicals and DerPalmenmann is the cheapest in my opinion. And check 'offer of the week' every Monday. You may come across really cheap plants

I bought a 5 year old from the PC in 2000 and it was about 40cm. high. It is now just over 110 cm high and has been out for the past 6 years. It had a spear pull after the winter of 2008/09, but not this past winter. The foliage does appear to attract red spider mite and mealy bug under glass. Outside it is almost (but not quite) as attractive to slugs and snails as Chamaedorea microspadix. As a result, mine is looking very ragged ATM

You may come across really cheap plants I did that and they do appear to be very good price-wise, although the shipping costs make it less advantageous for us here in the UK. £18 worth of plants costs £16 to send, which almost doubles it up. Nevertheless, in the hope that they will be better than is available here, I ordered another Cycas (I seem to have a fetish for the common!) and a Ravenea to replace one I killed.

 Re: Seriously expensive palms
Quote: £18 worth of plants costs £16 to send, which almost doubles it up It works both ways. Shipping from Britain to continental Europe also costs a lot. Usually twice as much. And it's hard to find a British seller that sends plants overseas.
