Paul Spracklin visits Mexico - For Agave/Yucca Lovers

Post by Andrew Smith »

I found this web site which I found very interesting.

Paul has visited Mexico on various occasions and has put many photos on his web site.
Some of these photos are absolutely stunning. It is nice to see these plants growing in their natural habitat. :D :D :D

This link shows Agave gentryi and Agave montana. Apparently I have read that A. Gentryi is very hardy and can cope with cold wet winters as well.

I had two A. Montanas in my garden which both came through this past winter unblemished, so perhaps A. Gentryi would be worth a try.

Agave Gentryi is stocked by Pan Global Plants:

Andrew, you have to use the tabs to get the links to work. phpbb does not like something in those web addresses and has truncated them.... maybe spaces or something.

Paul Spracklin was the owner of the UKOasis (UKO) forum which many of us were members, and was the foremost exotic gardening forum in the UK. Yes, he is very knowledgable particularly on Arid plants, and has probably the best Arid (outside) private garden in the country. He posts over on EPS.

If anyone has any pics bung 'em on icon_thumright

I don't think there is much chance of him posting on here as we are a much more lighthearted, nattery lot, that talk about a very wide range of subjects, including off topic. The lighthearted nature of this forum is what very many on here like, but it is not everyone's cup of tea. We are more aimed at people who enjoy an obsession about unusual and exotic plants, but there is probably not much to offer to a really serious specialist collector.
Best regards
Dave

He is fortunate in having a steep sw facing sloping garden. Even winter sun will warm the ground a little, cold air will drain away, and it is sheltered from the North and East. I'm on the opposite side of the Thames with a northern sloping garden and exposed to North and East winds

Anyone wishing to try a.gentryi I've got fresh seed in of a unique sub species called La Escondida after the location the seed was harvested from in Mexico. http://www.selectsucculents.co.uk/agave ... s%201.html

I'm propagating 100 of these myself for stock and intend trialing out doors.
my montana's have stood -12c this year outdoors and are fine. Conditions that killed My americana's.

To my knowledge he was one of the first if not the first to bring montana & gentryi in. The piece he did on his trip to Mexico where he photographs and describes wild populations is really interesting.
